Firefighters battled a major fire that broke out in the Berlin Philharmonic concert hall's historic auditorium just as a public performance was finishing on Tuesday, authorities said.

The blaze started near the roof of the building, but the cause was not immediately clear, fire officials said. Thick clouds of smoke could be seen billowing over the German capital.

Concertgoers and performers were quickly evacuated from the hall and there were no reports of injuries, officials said.

More than 150 firefighters and 20 vehicles were at the scene trying to extinguish the fire, he added. Some of the firefighters assisted performers who rushed to the building to rescue their instruments.

A spokesperson for the fire department couldn't confirm speculation that welding work was the cause of the fire. A Philharmonic official told German radio she didn't believe the main auditorium of the iconic 1963 building had been affected.
