Martian Skies - The Big Picture - Boston.com

  • Yesterday's announcement by NASA of the discovery of water ice on Mars by its Phoenix Lander probe made big news everywhere. The discovery involved the observation of water ice sublimating into the air - that is, the water went from solid to vapor state without reaching the liquid stage. The Martian atmosphere has perfect conditions for sublimation - extremely thin, dry and cold. How cold? Well, you can check the Live Martian Weather Report, with data from a station on board the Phoenix Lander. Today will see a high temperature of a toasty -26 degrees F.

What more do we know about Mars' atmosphere? It's hundreds of times thinner than Earth's atmosphere and is made of 95% carbon dioxide, 3% nitrogen, 1.6% argon, and contains traces of oxygen, water, and methane. We also know, from observations that it can support dust storms, dust devils, clouds and gusty winds. With an amazing number of six current live probes exploring Mars (two rovers, a lander, and three orbiters), there are many thousands of images available. Only a few, however show atmospheric phenomena. Presented here are some of the best images of Martian atmosphere (and beyond) in action. (

Flickr: The Commons

  • Back in June of 2007, we began our first collaboration with a civic institution to facilitate giving people a voice in describing the content of a publicly-held photography collection, The Library of Congress. The pilot project we created together launched on January 16, 2008. (More info on the pilot.)

The key goals of The Commons are to firstly give you a taste of the hidden treasures in the world's public photography archives, and secondly to show how your input and knowledge can help make these collections even richer.

You're invited to help describe the photographs you discover in The Commons on Flickr, either by adding tags or leaving comments.*

Get Those Photos Off the Phone

  • Pyramid Research has estimated that 95% of the photos taken with cameraphones stay on the phones. A Kodak survey showed 66% of cameraphone owners rarely or never uploaded photos to their computer. Another survey by the mobile imaging technology company Ontela found users would like to do more. In that survey, 40% of the mobile phone owners surveyed said they would consider changing carriers if the operator would make it easy to share photos.

Break away from digital uploads - The Boston Globe

  • now you can let your camera handle it, thanks to new photo gear with wireless Internet access built in. A few such cameras have begun popping up, and there's also a little device called Eye-Fi, a camera memory card that also turns almost any digital camera into a Wi-Fi photo transmitter.

How to connect your PC to your HDTV - Engadget HD

  • Now that we all know how to get OTA HD, now we need to know how to connect our HTPC to our HDTV, so that we can watch our free HD in all its glory. Sure HD is cool on a computer monitor, but it's nothing like a huge HDTV.

How you do this will depend primarily on your PC and your HDTV. Lucky for us that they both share some common interfaces.
