The Last Express - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

  • The Last Express is a video game created by Jordan Mechner and Smoking Car Productions, published in 1997. It is an adventure game that takes place on the Orient Express, days before the start of World War I. It is noted as being one of the few video games that attempts to realistically simulate real-time, and also as one of the largest commercial failures in the history of video games (with a reported six million dollars in development costs) despite many rave reviews and an impressive pre-release response.

Slashdot | Your Lord of the Rings Online Questions Answered

  • Last week we asked you for questions to pass on to Turbine CEO Jeff Anderson, about their recently released Lord of the Rings Online Massively Multiplayer Online Game. There were a ton of great queries, and unfortunately Mr. Anderson had only a limited time to spare for us. Over the phone we still managed to discuss a wide variety of topics, including: their use of the license, lessons learned from the Asheron games, World of Warcraft impact on the genre, what Tolkien would have thought, and whether or not they're working on a Linux/Mac client. Make sure to give them a look, and many thanks again to Mr. Anderson for taking the time to speak with us.

  • Shock: Social Science Fiction is a fiction game of culture and future shock. Based on the works of Bruce Sterling, Kim Stanley Robinson, Ursula K. LeGuin, and Philip K. Dick, the game pushes the players to make stories that matter to them — stories about politics, philosophy, love, and death.

Worlds In Motion - Q & A: Susan Wu on Dichotomous Worlds

  • "The distinction between what Facebook and an MMO looks like is going to disappear," Wu says. "All social interaction online will be driven by game mechanics. My goal in doing these conferences and blogging about this subject and trying to find companies to invest in is, how do I bring these two segregated universes together? There are all these Web 2.0 conferences, and Web entrepreneurs basically talking amongst themselves in this insular environment, and I see the same thing in the gaming industry, which has always been a cottage industry and very segregated. I see so many different parallels going on in these two communities, and my goal is to bring them more closely together."

Hub back in scoring position - The Boston Globe

  • Boston has just 4.4 percent of the game design workforce -- about 1,750 people.
  • Most local game companies serve only as developers, toiling at the behest of giant publishers like Microsoft, Take-Two, Electronic Arts Inc., and Activision Inc. The publishers, which finance, market, and distribute games, are the real industry titans, and none of the majors is located here.

Amazon.com: Customer Discussions: Warning - Based on "philosophy" of Ayn Rand

  • In response to Alexander Strickland, you're right, it does not necessarily condone Objectivism. I don't think it's as simple as all the WWII games, though. It's pretty clear that, by actually naming the antagonist and creator of the world you are exploring in the game after Ayn Rand, they are trying to make some sort of critical statement about her philosophy. What that statement is, and wheter it supports or refutes Objectivism, is what is unknown.

BioShock | Gamers With Jobs

  • BioShock will be Ken Levine's magnum opus. It will be his career defining game. It's ambitious, unusual and aggressive, mixing the high polish expected of a "next generation" shooter, with equal parts storytelling, politics, and philosophy, all wrapped up in a bloody, underwater, 1940's bow.

Some months ago, I spent a day with Levine and his team at Irrational Games in Quincy, MA. It was a chance to see the game first hand before they were really ready to do any "hands-on" with the press, but mostly it was a chance to talk to one of the industry's more interesting developers. See, Ken Levine believes he's blowing the doors off the first person shooter genre, and he's daring you to prove him wrong. But mostly, he's asking you to think.

Pitching to online gamers - The Boston Globe

    • There's not a lot of baseball memorabilia in Curt Schilling's office in Maynard, but you'll find plenty of swords.

In fact there's long-bladed cutlery all over the place at 38 Studios LLC, the entertainment start-up founded by the Red Sox pitching ace. The swords set the right tone for a company that's developing a new massively multiplayer online fantasy game, or MMO.

But a supply of magic wands might be more useful. There are already plenty of online sword-and-sorcery games -- the most popular, Blizzard Entertainment's World of Warcraft, boasts 8.5 million players. Besides, 38 Studios won't introduce its offering until 2010. What will the market look like by then?

"To get into gamers' heads, to penetrate the market, you have to do something significant," said Schilling, who is such an avid fan of the game EverQuest that Sony Online Entertainment created an in-game character in his likeness.

Schilling and his colleagues say their game will be radically different from its rivals -- so different, it'll transform the gaming genre. But we'll have to take their word for it because 38 Studios guards its secrets with unusual fervor.
