TIP OF THE MONTH WINNER. Our family loves to camp, but with four children under age six, packing and keeping track of clothes can be a problem. I soon learned that if I packed an outfit for each child, including underwear, in a zip-type storage bag, then all I had to do was pull out a package for each child and take them to the showers. FREEZE RICE.
I freeze the rice in margarine tubs, which are perfect for one serving. When I want to defrost it, I heat the rice in the microwave for 3 minutes. The rice tastes like I just made it that day, and it saves me time on busy nights.
SOFT SUGAR. A slice of bread in a bag or box of brown sugar that has become very hard will soften it quickly, and it will stay soft for some time.
CHEAP INK. Replacement ink cartridges for my ink jet printer cost $30 retail at any number of office supply stores. Imagine how pleased I was to find a place online called www.clickinks.com, where they have compatible ink cartridges for my printer for just $6.95. They have all kinds of specials and sometimes I qualify for free shipping. I was leery because I have tried compatible ones before and they didn’t work, but these work perfectly for me.
BLOOD STAIN REMOVER. Hydrogen peroxide will take blood stains out of everything! Once my daughter suddenly had a bloody nose and the drops of blood fell on several areas of her pink shirt before we could grab a tissue. I used hydrogen peroxide on the spots, and they came out within seconds.

CHINA SAVERS. Instead of using those expensive and bulky separators when I stack my fine china, I use coffee filters. I put large ones between plates and small ones between smaller items like cups and saucers. They work well and are a lot cheaper, too. Anne, Tennessee
SAUCEPAN CLEANUP. Here’s what to do for heavily soiled saucepans: After cooking, allow the pan cool down. Then add water with a little baking soda, or more for a really tough job. Cover the pan and bring to a boil for a few minutes. Then let the pan cool down again, and clean with soap and water using a scouring pad. Rinse well. The baking soda will release all the cooked-on mess, making cleanup so much easier. Angelina A., email
CHIP STORAGE. I store all my open bags of potato chips and tortilla chips in the refrigerator. Simply fold the opened bag closed, secure with a clip and toss them in the ‘fridge. They stay fresh for weeks. Gina S., Wyoming
SAVE THE SHAMPOO. We had a problem with the kids using too much shampoo, which made it hard for them to easily rinse it all out. It also meant we were wasting a lot of shampoo. Automate your finances. For all my bills, I have them either automatically deducted (like my car payment and phone) or have a regular online check going out to them each month. The only things not paid online are the things I need cash for, like gas and groceries.
The Envelope System. For everything that you can’t automate online, withdraw the cash each payday (instead of using ATMs and incurring fees) for those expenses and put them in separate envelopes. I have three: groceries, gas, and spending (everything from eating out to kids school stuff). When the money runs out in that envelope, you can’t spend anymore until next payday. It’s a simple way to keep track of how much you have left, instead of guesstimating and withdrawing too much or charging too much.
Find free ways to have fun with your kids. While we are making sacrifices, and our kids have to make sacrifices too, that doesn’t mean we can’t have a great time with them. We plan a Family Day every Sunday, when we all do stuff together that we love doing, like reading, watching movies (we usually rent DVDs to save money), playing sports, going to a park, playing board games, going to the beach, visiting family, or doing a lot of other free or cheap stuff. Fun doesn’t have to cost a lot.
Plan ahead. If you know someone’s birthday is coming up, plan for it, so you’re not scrambling to find money to buy a gift. Same thing with school expenses, like field trip money or school photos. Our kids are also involved in sports, so we have to plan for uniforms and cleats and more. Think ahead to what you’ll need, so you’re not broke when that expense comes up.
