AT&T Loophole + Google Voice = Free Calls On Your iPhone

  • AT&T uses CID for determining incoming calls, and will see that incoming calls via Google Voice are actually ‘forwarded’ calls.

They will start showing up in your call history as coming from your own cell number. Those calls be billed as normal billable calls, even if you have your GV number listed in your A-List.

Outbound calls where you call your GV number first, are still shown properly.

  • Matt Towers said:

@AJR – I can second that. I’ve started using GV for all of my business calls and was surprised to see my own number listed as the dialed number on my bill.

I asked AT&T why my own number would show up and 3 out of 3 reps were stumped. They escalated the issue to an internal tier-2 support group who are supposed to get back to me by Tuesday of this week.

My guess is that they found and closed the loophole by detecting forwarded calls.

ATT Wireless preventing Google Voice inside A-List

  • They are letting you your Google Voice number to your A-List, but tagging it in their system as an anytime-minutes call, while reducing your monthly available minutes if you receive a call to your Google Voice number.
  • I fail to see how this is in any way different from my choosing to forward an office phone (which I do via follow me features) when out of the office.

  • Calls made from or to a GV number will show up on your AT&T bill as having originated from your AT&T number.
  • GV calls are recognized by AT&T as forwarded calls. They then use this fact to filter GV calls. The question is, what happens if a call is forwarded from another, non-GV number? My guess is that they will treat it as a call from GV and filter it.

Will an AT&T incomming call through google voice be considered Mobile to Mobile? - Google Voice Help

  • The A-list suggestion only works with outgoing calls but not incoming.
  • My gv is set to show the CID of the caller, on my bill it shows as my own number calling me. When it is set to show google voice number, even though google voice is on my A-list is still shows that I'm calling myself. But heres my question now: AT&T customer calls my gv number and it connects and it does not count as a M2M call. When google voice shows up as the CID it does not count as an A-list call. Both calls show up as my own cell number calling me on the bill. Well my cell number is technically an AT&T number so if I call myself shouldn't that also be considered M2M? :)
