Web 2.0: Overview for Educators

  • Do you hear the buzz? The new vocabulary of ed-tech talk bursts with keywords like blog, podcast, wikis, webinar and the ultimate umbrella term: Web 2.0.  Web 2.0 describes a second generation of websites where the tech literate can read, write, publish and respond to information. Blogs, wikis, podcasts and webinars are the publication tools that make it all happen.  Web 2.0, dubbed the Read/Write web by visionary educators and thinkers gives everyone with access to the Internet a truly international voice. (By last count a billion people are online.)

Yesterday we could use search engines, subject indexes and the deep web to locate, evaluate, and use digital information. Today we can do all that while juggling a remarkably diverse set of new user friendly web based applications to create and publish a custom tailored world of digital information.

Create a Free Website , Free Flash Website Builder at Wix.com

Looks like a good e-portfolio platform for those without html experience. Tradeoff is you have to go with the templates, will be difficult to customize. Bonus is a very slick looking flash based site without too much tech overhead required.

50 Great Examples of Data Visualization

  • Wrapping your brain around data online can be challenging, especially when dealing with huge volumes of information.

And trying to find related content can also be difficult, depending on what data you’re looking for.

But data visualizations can make all of that much easier, allowing you to see the concepts that you’re learning about in a more interesting, and often more useful manner.

Below are 50 of the best data visualizations and tools for creating your own visualizations out there, covering everything from Digg activity to network connectivity to what’s currently happening on Twitter.

14 Ways K-12 Librarians Can Teach Social Media - NeverEndingSearch - Blog on School Library Journal

  • This is the best time in history to be a teacher-librarian. Major shifts in our information and communication landscapes present new opportunities for librarians to teach and lead in areas that were always considered part of their role, helping learners of all ages effectively use, manage, evaluate, organize and communicate information, and to love reading in its glorious new variety.

A school’s teacher-librarian is its chief information officer, but in a networked world, the position is more that of moderator or coach, the person who ensures that students and teachers can effectively interact with information and leverage it to create and share and make a difference in the community and beyond.

7 Things You Should Know About Collaborative Annotation | EDUCAUSE

The concept of collaborative annotation may seem strange to you now. I think that the real nature of this work will provide a eureka moment that makes web 2.0 tools suddenly make a lot of sense!

  • Collaborative annotation tools expand the concept of social bookmarking by allowing users not only to share bookmarks but also to digitally annotate web pages. Rather than simply pointing to particular web pages, collaborative annotation lets users highlight specific content on a web page and add a note explaining their thoughts or pointing to additional resources. Students who use these tools for academic research can, over time, build a collection of their own studies and observations in much the same way generations of students have saved texts with dog-eared pages, highlighted passages, scribbled comments, and sticky notes. The activity of adding reflections as marginalia can move students from being passive consumers of information to active readers engaged in scholarly discussions.

Students Thrive on Cooperation and Problem Solving | Edutopia

  • PBL to the Rescue

Enter project-based learning, designed to put students into a students-as-workers setting where they learn collaboration, critical thinking, written and oral communication, and the values of the work ethic while meeting state or national content standards. Homewood School, in Tenterden, England, in that spirit, calls its PBL program Total Learning.

In traditional classrooms, students typically work on simple assignments that emphasize short-term content memorization; they work alone, write for the teacher alone, and rarely make presentations. But don't confuse PBL with simply doing activities injected into traditional education to enliven things as a culminating event for a learning unit. Real PBL, by contrast, is deep, complex, rigorous, and integrated.

  • Educational Origami is a blog , and a wiki, about the integration of ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) into the classroom, this is one of the largest challenges that I feel we as teachers face. It's about 21st Century Learning and 21st Century Teaching. Marc Prensky coined the now popular and famous phrase "Digital natives and digital immigrants" in his two papers by the same name. Ian Jukes talks about Digital Children.
