The Screenr Blog

This blog supports Screenr, a desktop video system tied to your twitter account. After capturing the video (max length 5 minutes) you have the choice of tweeting the video url, posting the video to YouTube, downloading the video as an MP4, or using an embed code for webpages. \n\nScreenr is similar to Jing in many ways. However, it does not live on your computer, it's completely online or 'in the cloud' if you prefer. Also, screenr gives you functionality you'll have to pay for with Jing. \n\nThis blog will show you a lot of things that Screenr will go. If you have a need for desktop video, give Screenr a try!

Moodle Tutorials ::: Educating Educators

This is a relatively new resource that I've jut re-discovered. The best part of working with video tutorials is the ability to start, stop, and replay key sequences. The down side of producing video tutorials is they take a long time to create and can be made obsolete when there's a new edition. Our Moodle runs the most current edition of Moodle 1.9 hosted by Moodlerooms.

Program for the Future - Engelbart Timeline Mural Interaction

I was exposed to the work of Douglas Engelbart at the recent Sloan-C. This video provides a walk through of a mural that captures the life and ideas of Engelbart, inventor of hypertext, and the mouse among other things. The thesis of the presenter is that Engelbart's work at SRI essentially predicted almost everything that is on the tech market right now. \n\nWhat I found odd about the Sloan presentation was the disconnect between the ideas and the presentation mode. From the audience it was difficult to see the mural and the lecture presentation method didn't walk the talk. However this video, shows a much more interactve approach to the work. \n\nIronically, even though this work is about the origins of multimedia, the actual process the presenters (in the video) use is something that could have been done in the stone age. Interacting personally with a mural is powerful personal experience. \n\nI was left dreaming of how modern media like Prezi and interactive flash could demonstrate and expand the ideas represented in this historical timeline of technology old from the life perspective and experiences of a seminal mind; Douglas Engelbart.

Doug Engelbart: The Demo

This is the original 1968 Englebart teleconference demonstration of technology innovations. A black and white video capturing the work at Stanford Research Institute and Douglas Englebart. He works to show, rather than tell what being an computer powered intellectual worker. This is the Demo Called: The mother of all Demos, credited with launching so much of what we live with today in a wired world.\n\nHe's showing his audience break through ideas like typing text on a screen, copying text, making lists, quickly revising ideas, saving a file, being able to recall notes, jumping from text to text... how it starts with a blank screen. \n\nThe name of his workspace says so much: Human Intellect Research Center at SRI... as I watch this man demo jumping from link to link on the page, I see the birth of hypertext. I'm on YouTube watching and listening as his ideas unfold and I recall his brief speech on stage (at age 84) recalling the moment when he recognized the enormous power of being able to link ideas in what would some day become known in cyberspace. For that moment, as he traced the movement of ideas in the air with his hands you could see the young man's mind and passion renewed. \n\nTo our modern eyes, this work will seem a bit nerdy and very basic. \n\nHis 1968 focus is on a basic process: compose, study modify. His point being that simply linear thinking is inadequate to the task when building complex systems. \n\nIt's easy to forget that in 1968 computers were mainframe monsters available only to rich corporations, universities, and the government. Here we see the origins of the personal computer and better understand the transformation impact of ideas.\n\nAfter demonstrating what would become 'word processing', Englebar begins to draw on the screen and relate this drawing of his route home from the office to his shopping list. We cut to a feed from Menlo Park that demonstrates the Mouse. Englebart explains the technology that has changed very little since 1968. The mouse is used to follo
