Internet Search Challenge
Carl Heine's brilliant blog on Internet Search skills. A must read.

I don't speak Spanish, but can usually figure out the meaning of traveler's information printed in a couple of languages. My insufficiency became evident when searching online for information on La Posada, a Mexican Christmas tradition.
-
The paradoxical thing about information and searching is that the more of it there is, the less of it we will see. The results we retrieve will be a smaller and smaller sample of what's actually available. And I don't see how this trend can be reversed.

information fluency @ Bing vs. Google
Here's a side by side comparison of Bing Vs Google results on the term: Information Fluency
21cif.com ( formerly 21cif.imsa.edu ) has been online for 10+ years and dominates the Google Search results. Nothing in the top ten for Bing? Google ranks our old url #1 and our new url #4. Give this a try for your self with the same terms? I'll bet you get radically different results from Google than I do. Since I've worked on the 21cif project for nearly 8 years, I know the materials well. Also Google has adapted to my search habits and provides me with more links relevant to my interest. On the Google page I'm given a link to my search-wiki results: http://tinyurl.com/21cif-search-wiki
This proves the point 21cif has been making for a decade: USE MULTIPLE SEARCH ENGINES! The more sources of information you tap, the better your chances of getting a less filtered view of what's available on the world wide web

Hear Names: Learn How to Pronounce Names Correctly - Home
This site provides a way to learn name pronunciation. Searching for names presents some unique challenges. How often do we have to guess at the pronunciation of a name, let alone the spelling? According to a news article in the Wall Street Journal, this site has " amassed 11,000 pronunciations ranging from Aabha to Zwai". The site's creator, Elizabeth Bojang ( pronounced Bojohng) works with a tape-recorder asking people to pronounce their names. This is obviously a labor of love, and an interesting peek into how the Internet can spawn personal projects that can help us all.
Whether you are a nurse registering patients, a customer service representative with client lists, or a member of the media with a story to break, our site can help you learn how to pronounce people's names. This is a free resource that anyone can use.

Internet Search Challenge: Coolhunting Web 2.0
-
The basis of coolhunting is that you can use Web 2.0 tools to locate creative swarms of individuals who are developing new ideas before they reach a tipping point. Web 2.0 forums, chat, bulletin boards, etc. (even emails) afford a window into the communication patterns of people who are engaged in creative swarms.
-
That means when searching Web 2.0 for information, at least 80% of people are at a distinct disadvantage. Without being involved in a conversation, they don't earn the trust of the individuals who are involved.
