YesICan Polar Science 2009

"In 2005 and 2006 we followed the Antarctic field seasons of a team of scientists from the United States and Canada. Led by Dr. Shane Kanatous, the team is trying to answer the question - how do the skeletal muscles of seals develop to work during deep dives, even when the animal is not breathing for long periods of time. The researchers believe the answers to this question may have tremendous implications for human medicine. By understanding how another mammal has successfully overcome the debilitating effects of working under low oxygen conditions, we may be able to learn new therapeutic approaches to assist humans with heart or lung disease.

While 2009 is not a field season for Dr. Kanatous and his research team, we will be working with both Dr. Kanatous and Dr. Hawke from their labs in Colorado and Ontario. They are very generously giving their time to help us investigate the physiology of the Weddell seal, and its amazing ability to exercise deep under water without the need to take a breath. Along the way, you'll gain a better understanding of the workings of your own cardiovascular system. "

Borderland › Getting Organized

We’re into the second week of school here this year. I’m still in the early getting-to-know-you period with my class, and we are all more or less on our best behavior, but judging from what I’ve seen so far this is going to be a good year. It’s my 27th in the classroom, and you’d think I’d have it down pat by now, starting off, but I don’t feel that way. I never do things “just like I always do” which would no doubt be boring. Not only that, the kids are always different. I usually map out a general course I’d like to follow and then see how it goes, taking my cues from the group. When I started teaching I imagined that the job would get easier over the years. That was a huge miscalculation. But I don’t mind because it’s also gotten more interesting in many ways.

10 Ways Journalism Schools Are Teaching Social Media

"With news organizations beginning to create special positions to manage the use of social media tools, such as the recently appointed social editor at The New York Times, journalism schools are starting to recognize the need to integrate social media into their curricula. That doesn’t mean having a class on Facebook (Facebook) or Twitter (Twitter), which many college students already know inside and out, but instead means that professors are delving into how these tools can be applied to enrich the craft of reporting and producing the news and ultimately telling the story in the best possible way.

And though many professors are still experimenting and learning how these tools can be used, below are the 10 ways journalism schools are currently teaching students to use social media. Please share in the comments others that you have found to be important and effective as well."

NEA - Can Tweeting Help Your Teaching?

"But before you write off Twitter as just the latest social media "fad," take a look at how some clever educators are using it to enrich their classrooms and even forge informal professional networks. (As with any new technology, expecially social networks, educators should first find out if their school or district has a policy or guidelines on Twitter before proceeding.) "

Tweeting Your Way to Better Grades - US News and World Report

Sammy Garey, a recent graduate of Burlingame High School in Burlingame, Calif., is a devoted user of Twitter. She's used the website with her classmates for online book discussions for her AP English class, in which they post and share feedback, analysis, and questions about novels such as Crime and Punishment. Garey also turns to the website to check breaking news and feed her interest in science by following the tweets of specialized Twitter accounts such as MedUpdates and DrugInfo.

Announcing The Winners Of The Edublogger’s Student Competition! | The Edublogger

During April we ran The Edublogger’s Student Competition to celebrate the success of the 2009 Student Blogging Challenge while also creating an opportunity to collect examples of student work. The competition was for any class or student blogger and they could submit blog posts based on three different topic themes.

With an incredible number of entries judging has been exciting but challenging when you consider ages span from 6 to 18 years old. All of them would make their teachers’, parents’ and familys’ proud.

Taking into account feedback from how the winners of The Edublogger’s Birthday Celebration Competition was announced this time I’m including a brief summary of why each was selected.

How to Grow a Blog | blog of proximal development

At the beginning of the year, I always talk to my students about “growing” their own blog. It is a challenging concept because, when they are first introduced to blogging, they are all under the impression that everything they write will be graded and that their blog is just an electronic version of their notebook or journal. So, when at the beginning of the year, I start talking about blogging and the steps that the students need to take to “grow” their own blog, they are always a bit confused and surprised - my words suggest a lot of freedom, and freedom, as we all know, is not something that students associate with school.

NASA - Do-It-Yourself Podcast

Are you looking for a new approach to engage your students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics? NASA's Do-It-Yourself Podcast activity sets the stage for students to host a show that features astronauts training for missions, doing experiments in space or demonstrating equipment. We'll provide a set of audio and video clips along with photos and information about a space-related topic. You and your students may choose as many items as you want to include in your project and download them to your computer. Students may use the information we provide or conduct their own research to write a script for an audio or video production.

SpanishConnects.Us is an audio blog that documents student discussions with native Spanish speakers in distant parts of the world to better understand each other’s culture and share perspectives on local events impacting the world today.

In preparation for these discussions, students research a current issue of their choice, become comfortable with the topic and are able to conduct educated conversations with their distant partners. Through this process, students are able to improve linguistic proficiency by speaking in Spanish while receiving linguistic assistance from their native counterparts. The students then have the opportunity to reciprocate by assisting their partners with their English proficiency.

TeachPaperless

Last week, I gave my first Latin test using Twitter. My Latin III students had to translate the 'In Taberna' section of Carmina Burana. I allowed them to do it as a collaborative assessment and I gave a single score to the entire class so long as everyone contributed equally in the Tweet feed. Students had the text open in a Latin Library tab, had their online dictionaries open, had their blogs open in which to post their sections and organize their translations, and followed each other on Twitter. The trick was that although this was a collaborative assignment, the students -- under penalty of forfeiting the grade for the whole class -- were not allowed to talk.
