Announcing The Winners Of The Edublogger’s Student Competition! | The Edublogger
During April we ran The Edublogger’s Student Competition to celebrate the success of the 2009 Student Blogging Challenge while also creating an opportunity to collect examples of student work. The competition was for any class or student blogger and they could submit blog posts based on three different topic themes.
With an incredible number of entries judging has been exciting but challenging when you consider ages span from 6 to 18 years old. All of them would make their teachers’, parents’ and familys’ proud.
Taking into account feedback from how the winners of The Edublogger’s Birthday Celebration Competition was announced this time I’m including a brief summary of why each was selected.

At the beginning of the year, I always talk to my students about “growing” their own blog. It is a challenging concept because, when they are first introduced to blogging, they are all under the impression that everything they write will be graded and that their blog is just an electronic version of their notebook or journal. So, when at the beginning of the year, I start talking about blogging and the steps that the students need to take to “grow” their own blog, they are always a bit confused and surprised - my words suggest a lot of freedom, and freedom, as we all know, is not something that students associate with school.

Julie Shannan, who has a bachelor of arts in biology from the University of Texas at Austin, now also holds the distinction of being the first graduate of the vTSTC digital media design program as well as the first student to take an entire college curriculum within the virtual world of Second Life. She plans to take the next step in the digital media design program, and obtain an Associate's degree at vTSTC.

I can get the word out about a new book or vlog post in seconds - and each of the people who follow me might also feed my memes to their own networks. I used to just paint. Now I document my painting at each stage of the process, upload pix to flickr or flicks to blip.tv, then drop a tinyurl into Twitter.

When I started requiring digital journalism students to learn how to use Twitter, I didn't have the list of journalistic uses for Twitter that I have compiled by now. So I logged onto the service and broadcast a request. "I have a classroom full of graduate students in journalism who don't know who to follow. Does anybody have a suggestion?" Within ten minutes, we had a list of journalists to follow, including one who was boarding Air Force One at that moment, joining the White House press corps accompanying the President to Africa.

Today’s model of schooling is to bring the learner to the knowledge—tomorrow we will bring the knowledge to the learners. We must recognize that schools and classrooms are becoming nodes in networked learning communities. We must begin to think about how to organize learning in networked communities and not limit learning within the boundaries of classrooms and school buildings—which would be to limit our thinking to what has been possible in the past in a single school or node.

Wikipedia hoax points to limits of journalists' research - Ars Technica
Wikipedia may be a fantastic resource, but any savvy Internet user is aware of its limits. Edit wars, entries made and modified for PR purposes, hoaxes, and basic inaccuracies all creep into (and back out of) the system, meaning that any use of the information there for purposes that might be considered significant should require some serious fact-checking. And, accordingly, many academics don't accept references to Wikipedia, and its entries have been rejected as evidence by US courts. So, it's a bit of a surprise to find out that one Wikipedia hoax, perpetrated by a sociology student, managed to appear in a variety of news reports, and has stayed there even after the hoax was revealed.

The study found that 90 percent of educators have received fewer than six hours of professional development on cybersecurity over the past year but that more than 60 percent are interested in learning more about cybersecurity, or C3, issues, with cybersafety rated as their highest priority.
