NHS drops premium telephone numbers - The Independent 14th September 2009

Premium-rate phone numbers are to be banned across the NHS. Charges that force patients to pay more than the cost of a local call will be scrapped in England after a public consultation drew almost 3,000 responses.

The numbers – which start with an 084 – are used by some GP practices and hospitals, with people paying over the odds to contact their local health service. Patients will still dial 084 numbers but now they will pay only the cost of a local call.

I rang the swine flu helpline. The operator couldn't read the questions - The Times 24th July 2009

I was the first in my house to go down with the H1N1 virus. It was only a matter of time before someone else in the family followed. Seven days after my initial symptoms, my husband woke up with the telltale sore throat, headache and general all-over ennui that signal the start of this virus. By yesterday he was no better, his throat inflamed and his temperature hovering around the 38C mark.

Ministers have ordered hospitals in England to relax their ban on the use of mobile phones as fears about their interaction with sensitive medical equipment have receded.

But NHS managers warned that forcing sick patients to endure tinny renditions of "The James Bond Theme" and shouted conversations beginning "I'm in hospital" would be unlikely to speed their recovery.
