More Britons seeking suicide help - BBC Health News 17th November 2008

The UK has the third highest number of people registered with the Swiss suicide charity Dignitas, a BBC investigation has found.

The number of Britons on the group's list has risen to 725, behind only Switzerland and Germany, 5live found.

AN EGREMONT man hanged himself in a hospital toilet with his shoelace, an inquest heard last Thursday.\n\nMartin Herbert, 45, of Dent View, died at Yewdale Ward of The West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven on September 5, 2006 after tying the lace from his trainers around his neck and tying the other end to a window catch.

Anti-smoking drug linked to 10 British suicides - Daily Mail 8th November 2008

Health chiefs have revealed that ten people have committed suicide after taking a controversial anti-smoking drug linked to depression.

The disclosure by the Government’s drugs watchdog is the first time officials have revealed the link between Champix and suicide in this country. Earlier this year, US authorities announced they were investigating 37 similar cases there.

The argument against liberal reform of the UK's death laws once hinged mainly on the sanctity of life and the duty of doctors to prolong it for as long as possible. This argument has worn thin, and many are nowadays moved principally by the predicament of those who long to die. The obstacle, it seems, is no longer the high-flown notion of sanctity; it is the risk of everyday abuse - of discreet, economically motivated homicide - given the cash-strapped climate in which medicine operates today.

Married inmates' suicide analysed - BBC Health News 4th October 2008

Being married makes you more likely to commit suicide in prison, according to an Oxford University study.

Researchers who looked at almost 4,800 cases from 12 countries also found that white males were more likely to take their own lives while in jail.
