Sunbed ban on under-18s demanded to halt rising death toll - The Times 20th June 2009

The rise in sunbed use is causing at least 100 deaths a year and must be curbed with a ban on under-18s and unsupervised machines and the introduction of mandatory health warnings, government experts say.

Britons are so obsessed with tanning that schoolchildren queue up for 50p slot-machine sunbeds in their lunchbreaks, according to Alex Elliott, the lead author of a report on the dangers.

Health: Scientists discover evidence to support cancer 'smell' theory - The Guardian 21st August 2008

Ever heard the one about the dog that could sniff out cancers? Well, the story could have a basis in fact. Scientists revealed yesterday how odours from the skin could be used to detect certain tumours.

Human skin emits hundreds of chemicals known as volatile organic compounds, many of which are odorous. By comparing the chemicals released by the skin of healthy volunteers to those with basal cell carcinoma, the most common form of skin cancer, scientists were able to characterise the "smell" of the tumours.
