A FORMER health worker has won £825,000 damages from a health trust after being seriously injured in attacks by patients.
Lisa Carter, 38, was repeatedly punched, stamped on and bitten in a series of vicious assaults while working as a community carer for people with severe learning disabilities.

Politics: Tories attack civil service pay 'hypocrisy' - The Guardian 14th November 2008
The government will today be accused of double standards after new figures showed that senior civil servants are awarding themselves bumper pay rises while endorsing modest, below inflation, rises to staff on lower grades.
Alan Johnson, the health secretary, will be called on to explain the discrepancy, which has seen the most senior NHS civil servant receiving a pay award of up to 13%, while nurses are forced to accept a 1.9% increase.

UK healthcare 'behind Estonia' - The Guardian 14th November 2008
Patients get poorer healthcare in Britain than in the former Soviet republic of Estonia where services are provided for a fraction of the cost, according to a league table of 31 European countries published yesterday.
The Euro Health consumer index, compiled by a Brussels-based Swedish research institute, shows that the Netherlands and Denmark have the most consumer-friendly healthcare systems.

David Nicholson, who became NHS chief executive in 2006, earned the equivalent of between £195,000 and £200,000 in that financial year. The head of the NHS in England received a huge pay rise of up to 32 per cent at the same time as presiding over a below-inflation pay deal for nurses. Ministers face accusations of allowing the budget for senior NHS managers to almost treble in the past three years, from £1.2m to over £3.4m.

Doubts about safety of NHS maternity care as negligence payouts reach £1 billion - The Times 17th November 2008
Errors that caused serious harm to mothers and babies have accounted for nearly half of the £2.1 billion paid out as a result of medical negligence since 1995, The Times has learnt.
A total of £947 million has been spent on compensation relating directly to obstetrics, reflecting the increasing cost of lifetime care for children who have suffered brain damage, cerebral palsy or developmental delay.

MULTI-MILLION pound plans to redevelop a Wirral hospital have come a step closer after being approved by the region’s strategic health authority.
The £32m plans for St Catherine’s hospital in Birkenhead could see two GP practices from Tranmere moved to the site, along with enhanced facilities.
Wirral’s PCT wants to transform the site – much of which dates back to the Victorian era – into a community hospital providing community, out patient and day case services all on one “integrated site”.
