Is your Omega-3 fish oil supplement any good - or a load of old codswallop? - Daily Mail 17th November 2008

We have been told to take more of it, and there's strong evidence that Omega 3 really is crucial for our brains, hearts and immune systems.

We don't need any more convincing, it seems - keen to improve our brainpower, we now spend £60million a year on Omega 3 pills.

Vitamins do not reduce cancer risk, says study - The Guardian 17th November 2008

Taking vitamin A and E supplements does not lower your risk of cancer, according to the results of a large clinical trial involving nearly 15,000 men in the US.

Both vitamins are powerful antioxidants - substances that can tackle harmful byproducts of the body's metabolism which can cause DNA damage and hence trigger cancer. However, the study shows that taking the vitamins in supplement form has no effect at all on cancer.

A vitamin pill that could slow the progression of Alzheimer's disease is to enter human trials after scientists found it protected animals from memory loss associated with the condition.

High doses of vitamin B3 will be given to 70 people who have recently been diagnosed with the disease as part of the trial due to begin in the new year, which is open to volunteers over the age of 50.
