A 12-year-old schoolgirl has been left paralysed from the waist down by a mystery illness that came on 30 minutes after she was given the new anticervical cancer jab.

Ashleigh Cave suffered dizziness and headaches soon after the vaccination at her school and then deteriorated rapidly, collapsing several times over the following days.

Two patients have died and three more are seriously ill after being mistakenly given the all-clear by two doctors drafted in from overseas to help cut NHS waiting lists.

An undisclosed number of colonoscopy procedures, an operation where a camera is inserted into the bowel to check for malignancies, have had to be reviewed after a specialist found cancer in an unidentified patient in January this year.

THE solicitor-general, Vera Baird, has signalled the introduction of new rights for millions of carers of elderly relatives and sick children, raising the prospect of a clash with Lord Mandelson, the business secretary.
