Increase in women doctors ‘will put strain on the NHS’ - The Times 2nd June 2009

Women doctors will outnumber their male colleagues in a decade but the change is likely to place a strain on the health service, according to a new report.

More than half of all new medical students are women but they are far more likely than men to work part-time and choose specialties where they have set hours, according to the study by the Royal College of Physicians. This could lead to a shortage of surgeons and doctors in obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics or public health, and a need to recruit more doctors overall, the report suggests.

Alcohol-related deaths still high despite fall in mortality rates - The Guardian 27th January 2

Health charities said today that the number of people dying from alcohol-related deaths was unacceptably high, despite new figures showing a decline in mortality rates after many years of increases.

The Office of National Statistics said there were 13.3 deaths per 100,000 people in 2007, down from 13.4 in 2006. However, it is still almost double the rate of the early 1990s; there were 6.9 deaths per 100,000 in 1991.Throughout 2007, there were 8,724 alcohol-related deaths, lower than in 2006, but more than double the 4,144 recorded in 1991.

Vintage counts when it comes to excess alcohol consumption - The Times 23rd January 2009

Middle-class, middle-aged, married people are as likely as younger generations to drink alcohol in excess regularly, data from the Office of National Statistics suggests.

The figures showed a trend for women in professional or managerial jobs to drink at home, which doctors say is causing an epidemic of alcohol-related health problems. Some 67 per cent said they had drunk at home in the past week, compared with 14 per cent who had been to a pub or bar. This compared with 57 per cent cent of women in manual work.
