"An elderly resident of a care home in Wearside has died in hospital after contracting salmonella.

The woman, believed to be in her 70s, was one of eight staff and residents at the Millum House Care Home in Roker, Sunderland, who had become infected."

Baby recovers after catching salmonella from snake and lizard - Liverpool Echo 29th May 2009

The two-month-old from Widnes ended up in hospital sparking an investigation.

Environmental health bosses found a corn snake and a bearded dragon lizard living in the baby’s home were both carrying the deadly bacterium.

If cages are not carefully cleaned reptiles are prone to carrying the bug and owners are advised to thoroughly hand- wash after touching them.

Baby catches salmonella from pet snake and lizard - Liverpool Echo 28th May 2009

A TWO-month old baby was recovering at home today after catching salmonella from exotic family pets.

The Widnes tot was taken to hospital after environmental health officers found the family’s corn snake and bearded dragon lizard were both carrying the deadly bacteria.

Halton Council today issued a warning saying children under 12 months, pregnant women and the elderly were at increased risk because of their weakened immune systems.
