Although in Cumbria and Lancashire the figures for 2009 to date show a reduction in notifications and confirmed cases of mumps compared to the same period in 2008, the numbers are still worryingly high, with a total of 67 notifications from GPs to date.

Direct Health 2000, which has 16 clinics across the UK, has a waiting list of 16,000 for the single jab.

NHS Cumbria clinicians are reminding parents of the importance of the MMR vaccine.
A study released by The Lancet last week found that there 12,132 cases of measles in Europe in the last two years. These cases were mostly found in the UK, Romania, Italy, Switzerland and Germany, in patients who had never had the vaccine, or had not completed the full course.

A senior executive of the world's largest autism charity has resigned in a dispute about whether vaccinations could be a cause of the developmental disorder that affects an estimated one in 100 children.
Alison Singer says that numerous scientific studies have disproved the link first suggested more than a decade ago and that Autism Speaks, a US-based organisation committed to funding further research, needs to "move on".

Measles cases rise as MMR vaccination rate stalls - The Times 25th September 2008
The number of measles cases is set to exceed 1,000 for the first time in decades as vaccination rates for the MMR jab have stalled.
One in four children in England is still not receiving the suggested two doses of MMR – which guards against measles, mumps and rubella – meaning that coverage is significantly lower than that needed to prevent a measles epidemic, the latest figures show.
