Change law on organ donation, doctors say - The Independent 2nd November 2009

"Every adult in the UK would be legally required to decide whether to donate their organs after death, under a radical solution to the critical shortage of organs for transplant put forward by the country's oldest royal medical college. The ethics committee of the 500-year-old Royal College of Physicians (RCP) has called for an examination of "mandated choice" as a means of boosting the supply of organs, the shortage of which is leading to more than 1,000 avoidable deaths a year. Jeremy Laurance: Let's face our mortality and allow others to live - The Independent 2nd November 2009

"I have carried the same organ donor card for the past 25 years. It is always with me in my wallet and although I may be getting on a bit and my organs past their best, I am still a prime candidate, being a London cyclist.

Yet should someone one day scrape me off the road and find my card among my things, it would be useless. It contains the telephone number of a house I left 15 years ago and the name of my then next of kin, from whom I have been divorced for more than a decade."

Ageism in the NHS to be made illeagal - Asian Image 1st November 2009

"Like racism and sexism , ageism or discrimination of older people in public life is also an 'evil'! Despite various promises and undertaking given through Govt. policy documents eg National Service Framework for Older People ( 2001) , not a great deal has been achieved. Overt age discrimination may have diminished a little but the undercurrent of ageist practice still remains widespread. It is not always easy to 'prove' such behaviour ; a frail older person without a strong 'advocate' fighting for her, quite often doesn't have a choice rather than to accept such decisions. On top of that , it can also be argued , that older people themsleves often 'contribute' to such attitude. " the doctor is right , what can I expect at my age!'' "

He was appointed to the independent body given the task of providing scientific ballast to the formation of government policy. He has written on the relative harms of alcohol, Ecstasy and other drugs, based on a 30-year research career."
