"The Care Quality Commission (CQC) says one in eight NHS trusts must urgently improve the care it provides.
The CQC found a drop in the number of hospitals meeting basic standards in areas such as hygiene and safety. But it also said more services than ever could be rated good or excellent.
The CQC published ratings on England's 392 trusts and looked at every type of NHS trust, including acute, mental health, primary care and ambulance. The Blackburn with Darwen NHS trust in 2008 - 2009 in meeting core standard & providing services - the score said they just met the criteria."

"A health watchdog warned yesterday it would "hold the NHS's feet to the fire" as it identified 47 trusts that were failing to provide an acceptable service to patients.
The Care Quality Commission said annual performance ratings for every NHS trust in England, published today, showed 20 were rated "weak" on quality and a further 27 had never been rated better than "fair" on either quality or financial management in the four years since the present assessment system began."

Child dies after contracting E. coli - The Times 7th October 2009
"A young child has died after contracting E. coli, the food poisoning bug at the centre of separate outbreaks at two children’s “petting” farms in the past two months.
The death of the toddler from Devon is not linked to either of the two outbreaks the Health Protection Agency said today. It is not known how the child contracted the infection, which causes stomach upsets and diarrhoea. "

"A FIVE-YEAR-OLD girl who suffered kidney failure in March is thought to have been made ill by E coli contracted at the farm which six months later was at the centre of national alert.
Holly Nethercoat was kept in an isolation unit at Great Ormond Street hospital, London for two weeks after a visit to Godstone farm in Surrey. The farm was forced to close three weeks ago after 12 children were hospitalised after the outbreak of the virus and another 75 were taken ill."

A fifth farm attraction has closed down all areas where children and adults have contact with animals following a new E. coli outbreak in Yorkshire.
The Big Sheep and Little Cow Farm in Bedale, North Yorkshire, is being investigated by health chiefs in connection with possible linked to three cases of the 0157 sickness bug.

Shetland ponies or wild rabbits may have been to blame for the E. coli outbreak at a farm in Surrey.
Sixty-seven children and adults have been treated for the bug and eight are still in hospital in a stable condition.

Three more cases of E coli were today confirmed by health officials at a petting farm. The Health Protection Agency (HPA) said the number of people reporting symptoms of the O157 strain of the infection, linked to Godstone farm in Surrey, had risen to 67.
