Great-grandma Ellen Hughes suffered “horrific” bruising, a suspected broken thigh and a bleed on the brain after falling on three occasions while at Mossley Hill hospital.

This is indicative of a wider problem of how lack of long-term planning for children's services in the NHS as a whole risks damaging the quality of surgical care. Children's services in district hospitals have not been developed, and there is a risk of specialist hospitals being overwhelmed by referrals of simple cases.

AN EGREMONT man hanged himself in a hospital toilet with his shoelace, an inquest heard last Thursday.\n\nMartin Herbert, 45, of Dent View, died at Yewdale Ward of The West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven on September 5, 2006 after tying the lace from his trainers around his neck and tying the other end to a window catch.

The £32m plans for St Catherine’s hospital in Birkenhead could see two GP practices from Tranmere moved to the site, along with enhanced facilities.
Wirral’s PCT wants to transform the site – much of which dates back to the Victorian era – into a community hospital providing community, out patient and day case services all on one “integrated site”.

Last night MPs called for a full inquiry into the quality of care at the hospital, where children are treated for life-threatening conditions such as liver or kidney failure, neurological problems and chronic heart complaints.

"The Birmingham Children's Hospital is a major regional and national centre of excellence in paediatric care. In some of what we do, we are recognised as being world-class. Yet there aren't enough beds at the hospital for all the children who need to be treated in many of what are called our "tertiary services", such as children who need an organ transplant, or have a flat head, a complex heart problem or a major facial deformity, or who require brain surgery.

Aintree Hospital catering bosses are still managing to feed patients on £2.80 per person per day.
