The Big Question: Is depression increasing, and what is the best way to treat it? - The Independent 29th October 2009

"Why are we asking this now?

The National Institute for Clinical Excellence (Nice) yesterday published updated guidelines on the treatment of depression calling for extra focus on talking therapy, especially cognitive behaviour therapy, for depression and less focus on drugs. It also warned GPs to be more alert to depression in people with chronic health problems, amongst whom the condition is three times more common than in the general population. "

The findings of the largest-ever study of heroin and crack cocaine treatment programmes, published in The Lancet, will come as a relief to drug agency workers who feared their efforts were having little impact. Heroin and crack addicts often lead chaotic lives, fuelled by the proceeds of crime, which are among the hardest to turn around."

Sexually abused children in postcode lottery for therapy - The Times 20th July 2009

Children who suffer traumatic sexual abuse are not being given the chance to recover because of a shortage of therapy services, a charity says.

Each year at least 55,000 victims of sex abuse face behavioural and mental health problems because of a postcode lottery in access to therapy, according to the NSPCC. There is only one support programme for every 25,000 children in the UK and many areas have no therapeutic provision at all for abused children.

Simon Leigh is an addiction counsellor accredited by the Federation of Drug and Alcohol Professionals who also gives talks in schools on drugs (www.addictiontherapy.org.uk)

Sometimes it's scary just how much children know at such a young age. I talk to them like adults. It's one of the reasons schools invite me in. Unlike parents or teachers I don't say: 'You mustn't do this'.
