Circumcision does not reduce risk of transmitting HIV, study suggests - The Times 17th July 2009

Circumcising men with HIV does not reduce the risk of them transmitting the virus to their partners, a study suggests, but nonetheless the surgery may have some public health benefits.

Major circumcision drives were planned after trials from Uganda, Kenya and South Africa showed in 2006 that circumcision could cut a man’s risk of acquiring the human immunodeficiency virus by half.

Letters, the big issue: male circumcision - the health benefits do not justify the practice - The Observer 12th July 2009

Alex Renton argues the case for male circumcision ("So, would you have your son circumcised?", Observer Woman, last week). Renton's argument is valid only for the developing countries in which this research took place. Most European men are not circumcised but, despite this, have very low rates of HIV infection. Personally I'd rather give my winkie a good wash than cut off the top bit. I'm sorry this option is not open for Mr Renton, but he shouldn't take it out on innocent young boys who definitely don't deserve to be mutilated.

Failure to circumcise men 'may have cost millions of Aids deaths' - The Observer 5th July 2009

World Aids experts say the failure to act upon 25-year-old evidence that male circumcision plays a major role in preventing transmission of the human immuno-deficiency virus (HIV) may have cost "millions of lives", especially in Africa.

In 1985 researchers discovered that circumcised men who visited prostitutes in Kenya were much less likely to contract HIV. Some 30 studies on the issue were done during the 1990s, but it was not until 2004 that formal double-blind trials were commissioned by international Aids agencies. As a result of "overwhelming results" from these, pilot programmes for mass circumcision of men began in a number of African countries late last year.

Male circumcision 'may protect women against cervical cancer' - Daily Mail 18th December 2008

Men who have been circumcised gain double protection against AIDS and the virus that causes cervical cancer in women, research shows.

Three new studies show that circumcision reduces the risk of both sexually transmitted infections in men and possibly their future sexual partners.

The reports, published in the Journal of Infectious Diseases, will fuel the debate over whether men - and newborn boys - should be circumcised.
