"A young child has died after contracting E. coli, the food poisoning bug at the centre of separate outbreaks at two children’s “petting” farms in the past two months.
The death of the toddler from Devon is not linked to either of the two outbreaks the Health Protection Agency said today. It is not known how the child contracted the infection, which causes stomach upsets and diarrhoea. "

The woman, believed to be in her 70s, was one of eight staff and residents at the Millum House Care Home in Roker, Sunderland, who had become infected."

"A FIVE-YEAR-OLD girl who suffered kidney failure in March is thought to have been made ill by E coli contracted at the farm which six months later was at the centre of national alert.
Holly Nethercoat was kept in an isolation unit at Great Ormond Street hospital, London for two weeks after a visit to Godstone farm in Surrey. The farm was forced to close three weeks ago after 12 children were hospitalised after the outbreak of the virus and another 75 were taken ill."

Diners who were struck down with a vomiting bug after eating at Heston Blumenthal’s Fat Duck restaurant in Bray have been offered a free meal there.
The offer made yesterday to each of the 529 diners will cost his business more than £50,000. It came two weeks after an investigation blamed the outbreak on sewage-infested oysters and razor clams.

A fourth children's petting farm was closed tonight as health experts investigated a potential link with three people who have been infected with E coli.
World of Country Life farm, in Exmouth, Devon, was shut on the advice of East Devon District Council and the Health Protection Agency (HPA). The agency said it was "acting on information that potentially linked the farm with three individuals with confirmed E coli O157 infection". The farm has closed voluntarily while the local authority, the HPA and its partners conduct an investigation.

E. coli could be upgraded to a "notifiable disease" – on a par with infections like smallpox and measles – to speed up detecting outbreaks.
News of the development came as the number of cases of E. coli O157 linked to Godstone Farm in Surrey yesterday reached 57. The count is three times the normal rate of 15 to 20 cases that the Health Protection Agency (HPA) attributes to open or petting farms in England and Wales each year.
