AN EGREMONT man hanged himself in a hospital toilet with his shoelace, an inquest heard last Thursday.\n\nMartin Herbert, 45, of Dent View, died at Yewdale Ward of The West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven on September 5, 2006 after tying the lace from his trainers around his neck and tying the other end to a window catch.

THE former assistant manager of a medical practice in Workington, “cooked the books” to pay herself tens of thousands of pounds more than she was entitled to, a court heard on Tuesday.
Sandra Lancaster, 50, got away with so much from the Ann Burrows Thomas Health Centre, in South William Street, Workington, that at one time she was taking home more than some of the doctors, it was alleged.

County councillors are backing a bid to ensure Cumbrian doctors’ practices can continue to dispense prescriptions.
Patients who live more than one mile away from a chemist are currently able to get medication directly from their GP.
But Government proposals would mean patients could do this only if their surgery is more than one mile from a chemist or they live in rural areas.

PATIENTS in Cumbria have more cash spent on them for prescription cancer drugs than other areas of the country, new figures show.
Shadow health secretary Andrew Lansley said that figures released under the Freedom of Information Act showed that on average primary care trusts in England spent £390.17 per patient on prescription cancer drugs.
