First responders: NWAS ‘got it wrong’ - Crewe Chronicle 5th November 2008

A HEALTH scrutiny panel has slammed ambulance chiefs’ ‘heavy handed’ approach to their plans to streamline the life-saving powers of first responders in Nantwich.

A new report has been released containing a number of recommendations and while the report recognises North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) had no option other than to undertake a review of first responder schemes, it states: “NWAS has completely underestimated how CFR (Community First Responder) schemes are embedded within their local communities.

Mother, 60, dies after doctor cancelled ambulance on its way to her home to 'cut costs' - Daily Mail 5th November 2008

A mother died after an ambulance was cancelled by a doctor in a 'cost-cutting exercise'.

Ruth Hedge, 60, dialled 999 complaining of vomiting and a vehicle was dispatched to her home, an inquest heard.

But a doctor working on a pilot NHS scheme to cut unnecessary emergency call-outs stood the ambulance down after speaking to Mrs Hedge.

Saving lives in a virtual world - BBC Health News 27th October 2008

The call comes through. A young female has collapsed in the street outside a nightclub.

The paramedic is dispatched to the scene, parks his ambulance and starts to assess the situation.

The young woman appears drunk and is singing in a slurred way, but after an examination and blood and glucose tests the paramedic discovers she is also diabetic and in need of immediate treatment.

Child porn 999 man struck off - Liverpool Echo 17th October 2008

A MERSEYSIDE paramedic jailed for making nearly 2,000 indecent images of a child has been struck off.

Gerard Lawlor, 54, of Brandon Park Court, Southport, was jailed for 10 months after pleading guilty to making 1,920 indecent images of a child.

Damning verdict on health trusts' out-of-hours emergency care - The Independent 26th September 2008

Almost one in five health trusts are delivering poor quality care outside normal office hours, the most comprehensive investigation into urgent and emergency services has concluded.
