Where to Start

So, where do you start? As a first stop, I highly recommend reading SupportBlogging. It will explain what educational blogging is all about, what it means for students and educators, and how you can setup a blog. I also recommend Blogs for Learning which is a new site containing in-depth articles on educational blogging and fantastic screencast tutorials showing the ins and outs of various blogging platforms (including Wordpress and Blogger). Be sure to look over the article, “Student Blogging – What You Should Know,” and the case study, “Rocking the Cyber Canoe: Blogging in English.”

For teachers and students, I suggest using edublogs.org for blogging as they provide you with a free, hosted WordPress blog, a Wiki powered by Wikispaces, and Yacapaca assessment tool from the Chalkface Project. Or if you prefer, you can install a copy of WordPress manually on your own server or register for a free and hosted WordPress account at WordPress.com.

Using ICT for communication




This section relates to supporting clients in using ICT safely for
communication purposes, within the constraints of current legislation. Clients
should already possess basic ICT skills, such as simple word processing and the
ability to navigate the Internet using a web browser. You should also establish
the client’s communication needs, e.g. do they need e-mail for personal or
work-related correspondence, in order to assist in the selection of a suitable
e-mail service.





The use of e-mail has exploded in recent years, especially since the fall
in prices of home PCs and introduction of free Internet access in libraries and
schools. There are many advantages:











• the speed of delivery
  
• the ability to send to multiple recipients
  
• the flexibility of using web-based e-mail accounts for sending e-mails for
  various locations
  
• the ability to attach other types of files, such as images.
  
• the low cost involved in sending mail in bulk.

You should have an in-depth knowledge of electronic mail including:











• local e-mail software, systems and protocols
  
• the structure of e-mail addresses
  
• tracking e-mail messages - delivered, read etc
  
• using importance flags
  
• changing setting for preferred presentation

The Internet and digital technologies are powerful
educational resources when they are used effectively.  Understanding the
technology, being a skilful user and displaying safe effective practice is as
important as having a written safety policy and code of practice.
 Education in appropriate, effective and safe use is an essential element
of the school curriculum.  This education is as important for staff and
parents as it is for pupils.
