Now it seems that two applications I discovered thanks to The Photoletariat -- Pixlr and Mugtug Darkroom -- could prove me wrong about these worries.
Online photo editor Pixlr solves the problem of remote performance by using Flash as a local client connecting to the backend server and streaming the image, just as video would stream. In fact, the lower right corner of Pixlr's interface shows the frame rate and image size.
