epic_recs: Buffy vs. Edward by Jonathan McIntosh (PG-13)
What would happen if Edward moved to Sunnydale instead of... that rainy place in the northwest, and ended up falling for Buffy the Vampire Slayer? Well, for one thing, Buffy won't stand for any of this stalking nonsense. When I read Twilight (having been assured by everyone I knew that it was the best novel ever written), I found it vaguely creepy but I couldn't put my finger on why. This positively awesome vid helped me see what I'd been missing: Edward Cullen is a complete and total stalker. Brilliantly blending both canons, dialogue and all, Jonathan creates a thought-provoking, fast-paced, and highly entertaining story that shows Edward interacting with a strong, confident woman who is fully capable of taking care of herself, even against a vampire. To me, this is something that everyone should see, if only because it makes you think more about the undertones of the fic you're reading. Personally, I think old-school romances (you know, the ones with romantic rape and controlling possessive men) are fine reading if you like them, but the reader should understand that when a woman is saying no (but her body is saying yes) that is rape, even if in this particular novel it's rape fantasy. The same with Twilight. If you like the story, that's wonderful! But, still, it is an idealized form of stalking and that's something women should acknowledge and pass on to younger readers who may not yet understand that stalking, while potentially romantic in fiction, is equally likely to be dangerous (or even deadly) in real life.
butterfly | Vid Rec: Sleepwalker
Sleepwalker sung by The Wallflowers vid by Wendy (kitkatbyte) Bittersweet (mostly bittersad, really) Buffy/Xander vid. This vid has a lot of artist cuts and repeats that really go with the sound of the song. And there's a sadness that just... resonates. There's a sense of loving and knowing that it's hopeless and wishing that you could stop but... you can't. Some many places where the motion is perfectly on beat.
It has a driven, yet dream-like feel to it that works perfectly with the way that Wendy chose to edit it -- doubling some actions, folding over certain places. It has a hard-edged longing to it, one that makes clear how much more Xander might wish to have and will never get, because love doesn't work that way. Loving someone romantically is no guarantee that they will feel the same, nor should it be.
missmurchison | Caravan thoughts
"I said I'd post more about Caravan, the Vividcon auction vid sisabet made, when I got my thoughts in order. What follows is spoilery for the vid, so if you haven't watched you may want to go here and DL. What am I saying? Everyone needs to DL and watch this! It's Spike's journey, brilliantly told. When I won the bid, I didn't have my heart set on any particular music or theme. It was important to me that whatever we picked really resonate with Sisabet, and I don't have enough vidding knowledge to know what will work and what won't, so I was more than ready to explore possibilities. missmurchison | Caravan is posted!
sisabet has posted Caravan, the Spike vid she made for me after I won her in the Vividcon auction. There are a thousand things I want to say about this vid, but it's going to take me a while to get my thoughts in order. In the meantime, go watch it. It's brilliant. I sent her a bunch of emails about feelings and things that should have been impossible to vid, and she made them come alive in a way that went beyond the ideas I gave her. And she did it to one of my favorite pieces of music--Duke Ellington's Caravan. It's a song about a journey. And she's made it Spike's journey.
missmurchison | I'm back!
"[info - livejournal.com] sisabet finished my [info - livejournal.com] vividcon auction vid. It is amazing, and the only thing wrong with it is my name is on it. All I did was come up with a lot of insane, impossible-to-vid requirements. Somehow, [info - livejournal.com] sisabet figured out how to turn those into a reality that amazes me. My new hobby is sitting mesmerized, watching my beautiful vid over and over. I can't wait until it's unveiled publicly."

Reading the_shoshanna's vidder review of heres_luck's "Superstar" earlier made me realize that the VividCon 2003 DVD was necessary for the happiness of my soul, so I sat down with it while I awaited E.'s return. As each vid started I thought, "my god! this show was so freaking amazing." "Sleepwalker" by kitkatbyte had me in tears — actual heaving, wrenching sobs by the end.
Are you sure the solution is pie? - Birth Month Meme and Slashy Vids to Watch
I think I've mentioned a few times that there are some foxy slashy vids out there. Here are a few recommendations: "Tough to Have a Crush" OK Go by Linzee (spike/xander) Like schoolboys -- I hate you! I hit and kick you! I want to pin you down and bite your lip, and... Oh... Oh... Mmmm... "Closer" NIN by Sisabet (angel/spike)
Truly incredible. Looks like it's really going down. "Blame it on the Bossa Nova" by Emony (andrew/xander) Fantastic timing, great choice of song, and Xandrewey goodness. Theirloveiscanon. And geeky, but in a sexy way. Rowr!!"
timepiececlock | Vid Rec: haven't seen one of these from me in a while, have we?
I just watched a funky funny vid. Buffy and Faith, to the song "Anything You Can Do I Can Do Better." It's quite cleverly put together, matching the talking/singing to both Faith and Buffy. Where lip-synching usually fairs badly in vids, here it works, and the result is highly entertaining. Vidder: Katheryn

"Alright, confess: who made the "Something I Can Never Have" Buffy/Spike songvid? Because I just found it on my hard drive, and I don't remember whose work it is, but it's making me tear up something fierce. Oh, *sniff*!
[Edit: Okay, duh, there's a credit at the end of the vid, and it's by Redqueen"
butterfly | Vid recs:
Anticipate (Angel: the Series) vid by LC. Brilliant Connor vid. The concept is wonderful. "For every hand extended, another lies in wait. Keep your eye on that one... anticipate." A kaleidescope of Connor, showing his relationships with Angel, Cordy, and some with Holtz/Justine. When I Grow Up (Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Angel: the Series) vid by Ryan. A Cordelia vid that covers all of her sides, from Bitch to 'Saint' to Baddie. Extremely well done. It really made me feel much more for Cordy's character. "When I grow up, I'll turn the tables."
I'd also recommend Ryan's other vids."

It's one of these ideas where you wonder why nobody else has done this yet - obvious, once someone actually made the effort. Like all great ideas. In this case, a vid tribute to Joss Whedon, using scenes from his "written and directed" episodes in BTVS, AtS and Firefly (insert appropriate curse at Fox here). Plus his cameo as Numfar, which is inspired. Appropriately, the song used is Nobody Does It Better, and you'll find the vid in question here. While you're at this subsection of the site, have a look at the other vid the owner has created, which is a tribute to Darla and Connor. Having written about them only some weeks ago, it struck me as, pardon the pun, haunting. For Darla fans like myself, the entire site is a treat.

"I just watched a rather entertaining Buffy music video to Cell Block Tango from the Chicago soundtrack. It wasn't the greatest video in the world, but it was pretty fun to watch and left me grinning widely. I think the thing that amused me most was that the vid-maker used Buffy for the Katherine Zeta Jones character, and Dawn & Spike for the sister & husband "victims" who betrayed her. That part was really funny, as was the Anya/Xander "artistic differences" verse."
butterfly | Life and fandom:
Vid Rec: Strange Disease (BtVS) This is a hilarious Angel(us)/Buffy vid. I have to say that my favorite parts are the three sets of fight/dance sequences. First we have two Buffy dances/Angel(us) fights, then we have Angel's dance from She mixed up with Buffy fighting. These, I think, illustrate the tone of the vid. An amusing and brilliantly done vid that is well worth seeing.

I watched Nightmare Drusilla's Spuffy vid to "Every Me Every You"-- yay! I've been wanting to see a vid to that ever since the middle of last year. She did pretty decently too... I didn't understand the significance or intentions behind some of the clips she used, but overall it was cool. And there was one really sexy clip transition she did from the medallion begining to work in the FE's cave in Chosen to Spike punching Fire!Hands in Lurky's cave in Grave, to the line "Something blue." Niiiiiice.
butterfly | Vid recommendations:
Sleepwalker (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) vid by Wendy. Bittersweet (mostly bittersad, really) Buffy/Xander, has source up to Storyteller. This vid has a lot of artist cuts and repeats that really go with the sound of the song. And there's a sadness that just... resonates. "Cupid, don't draw back your bow." There's a sense of loving and knowing that it's hopeless and wishing that you could stop but... you can't. Some many places where the motion is perfectly on beat. Anyway, it makes me want to cry, so I should share. Oh! Just realized that I've never officially recommended a particular vid. Kryptonite (Andromeda) vid by JM Torres. This vid (which is Rhade/Dylan) is just brilliant. Every moment is perfect. I love the relationship between Rhade and Dylan as portrayed here. And there are just some gorgeous sequences. Even if you don't watch Andromeda, you should see this vid. It's just that good.
katta | thoughts on vids & other stuff
I don't know what is the weirdest: that there's a song called "Drop Kick Me, Jesus, Through the Goal Posts of Life", that there's a Spike vid set to it, or that said Spike vid is great fun. I'll have to feedback Penny Dreadful. She's got many vids I find funny. | I've been thinking about why it's so much harder for me to feedback a vid than a fic - after all, it's physically just as easy. Well, okay, I don't get vids in my e-mail so I can just hit "reply", but addys are included on most websites, so that's no excuse. It just takes a lot more effort. [more]

I so totally need to see "Manchild" now. _Totally_ need to see that show... I was watching a music vid of Anthony Stewart Head earlier, featuring clips from Buffy and Manchild. And, uh, YUM. *grins* He gets naked a lot. And there's a lot of sexual stuff. And uh, for anyone who wants to see the MV: Underneath Your Clothes It's... kinda on the R-rated side.

katta | vid watching
"I've spent the past few days watching all of catatonic's vids. Well, and doing some other stuff too. And since I'm not going to save even all of those I *liked* to my hard disc, I thought I'd make myself at least marginally useful and pointing you in the direction of the website (which I have, it's above) as well as telling which ones I liked the best: Animaniacs, Leather, Unwell, Sixteen Going on Seventeen, Goodnight Sweetheart, Porcelain, Crazy Faith, Prayer of St. Francis and Damn! I Wish I was Your Lover. In roughly that order. Animaniacs is a must-see. :-)
