Video Games Will Turn Your Kid Gay - Momlogic

the mutual fund The Timothy Group, which bases its investments on companies they deem moral, has put out their annual list of questionable video games. In their "score card" they use categories such as "Sex," "Violence," "Drugs," "Comic Mischief," and of course "Gay/Lesbian" to determine a game's morality. Huh? Here's the breakdown of the games they found questionable:

Marital Discord: Why Prop 8 Won
- It's not about race; it's about disinformation. - umjeremy on 2008-11-08

First,
there's the matter of the Yes on 8 coalition's staggering disinformation
campaign. Ad after ad told voters that without Prop 8, their churches
would be forced to perform same-sex unions and be stripped of their
tax-exempt status; that schools would teach their children to practice
homosexuality; and, perhaps most effective, that a smiling Barack Obama
had said, "I'm not in favor of gay marriage." This last bit went out in
a flier by the Yes on 8 campaign, targeting black households.
Dream Awakener » A Primer on Today’s Missional Church
- Great primer. The last line "focus on the West" is a needed disclaimer! - umjeremy on 2008-11-08

One thing about this primer is that it is an on-line primer. Which means you don’t have to purchase a book, a magazine or a journal to learn about the missional church, you can just read through these rich links. While this post includes links representing different continents, it has a focus on the West.
Running from hell | Ubyssey Online
- Interview with the estranged son of Fred Phelps (of God Hates Everyone fame) - umjeremy on 2008-11-08

The mattock, a close cousin of the pickaxe, is used to dig through tough, earthy surfaces—it loosens soil, breaks rock, and tears through knotted grass. Its handle is a three-foot wooden shaft, twice the density of a baseball bat and its dual-sided iron head is comprised of a chisel and a pick. It was Pastor Fred Phelps’s weapon of choice when beating his children according to his son, Nate Phelps.
“The Bible says ‘spare the rod, spoil the child,’” explained Nate, “and he would be screaming that out as he was beating us.” One Christmas night, Pastor Phelps hit Nate over 200 times with a mattock’s handle, swinging it like a baseball player.
Nate would hide out in the garage with his siblings, where he could escape his father’s wrath. What he couldn’t escape, however, was the fear of going to hell. He suffered much abuse growing up under the roof of the infamous Westboro Baptist Church (WBC)—he still suffers today.
RELIGION IN AMERICAN HISTORY: Is the Mortgage Crisis a Spiritual One?
- The Spiritual side of the subprime mortgage crisis. God is not to blame, but the spokespeople for God get it wrong sometimes. - umjeremy on 2008-10-03

While researching a book on black televangelism, says Jonathan Walton, a religion professor at the University of California Riverside, he realized that Prosperity's central promise — that God would "make a way" for poor people to enjoy the better things in life — had developed an additional, toxic expression during sub-prime boom. Walton says that this encouraged congregants who got dicey mortgages to believe "God caused the bank to ignore my credit score and blessed me with my first house." The results, he says, "were disastrous, because they pretty much turned parishioners into prey for greedy brokers."
Why Evangelism Methods Must Change « Church Planting Novice
- "Getting to heaven is not the goal of discipleship" - right on. - umjeremy on 2008-10-03
-
Deficient view of Heaven. Many evangelism programs are focused on “getting people to heaven” not treasuring Christ or living out his mission. Ultimately, we don’t GO to heaven; heaven comes to earth through the already/not fully lordship of Christ. Moreover, going to heaven is not the goal of biblical discipleship. Treasuring, obeying, and sharing Christ is.
Flexitarians: Can You Be a Part-Time Vegetarian? | Newsweek Project Green | Newsweek.com

It might seem like being a vegetarian of convenience isn't particularly inspiring, but a growing number of experts and even some famous foodies are fans. They say that cutting back on meat, rather than abstaining completely, may be a practical compromise that benefits our bodies and our environment.
Microsoft could save 45 million tons of CO2 emissions with a few lines of computer code | FP Passport
- Vampires!! - umjeremy on 2008-09-23

Microsoft should issue a software upgrade to every computer running Microsoft Windows worldwide. The upgrade would adjust the machine's energy-saving settings for maximum efficiency. Of course, this upgrade would have to allow critical systems to opt out. Nobody wants air traffic control computers to suddenly go into deep hibernation. But correcting for critical systems should be very simple for a company that churns out millions of lines of code every year.

- Vonnegut's notes can be used for sermon preparation too, I'm sure. - umjeremy on 2008-09-23

Some writing advice by Kurt Vonnegut Jr. on the subject of short stories, from Bagombo Snuff Box:
1. Use the time of a total stranger in such a way that he or she will not feel the time was wasted.
2. Give the reader at least one character he or she can root for.
3. Every character should want something, even if it is only a glass of water.
4. Every sentence must do one of two things -- reveal character or advance the action.
The Daily Saint: How Long Should You Stay at Your Current Job?
- From Archbishop Oscar Romero - umjeremy on 2008-09-23

"It helps now and then to step back and take the long view. The kingdom is not only beyond our effoerts, it is even beyond our vision. We accomplish in our lifetime only a tiny fraction of the magnificent enterprise that is the Lord's work. Nothing we do is complete, which is another way of saying that the kingdom always lies beyond us. No statement says all that should be said. No prayer fully expresses our faith. No confession makes us perfect; no pastoral visit brings wholeness. No program accomplishes fully the church's mission. No set of goals and objective includes everything. This is who we are. We plant the seeds that some day will grow. We water seeds that were already planted, knowing that they hold future promis. We lay foundations that will need much further development. We provide yeast that produces effects far beyond our capabilities. We cannot do everything and, realizing that, there is a sense of liberation in our very being. This enables us to do something and to do it very well. It may be incomplete, but it is the difference between the master builder and the laborer. We are laborers, not master builders, ministers, not the Messiah. We are prophets of a future that is not our own."
