As you know if you read my last column in Island connections. I am busy writing a book. It's going to be a wooftastic 'tail' about a loveable ex-pat pooch living in Tenerife (funnily enough). Here is a small extract from Chapter one ...............
In tourist terms June on Tenerife is one of the low-key months, but relating to what's going on around the island it's one of our favourite months.
"Political affiliations, dogma and individual policies aside, one naturally assumes and expects that one’s elected Government will at least manage whatever it does effectively and with appropriate due diligence to protect those whom it serves. "
"You will be helping to tackle the growing problem of disability hate crime and in turn your actions will be going toward improving the lives of many sick and disabled people including those who claim disability related benefits who are often fearful of or even becoming victims of abuse and in a minority of cases, direct assault and aggression."
"Exercise helps to alleviate pain related to nerve damage (neuropathic pain) by reducing levels of certain inflammation-promoting factors, suggests an experimental study in the June issue of Anesthesia & Analgesia, official journal of the International Anesthesia Research Society (IARS)."
"Newly reported research studies reiterate the benefits of vitamin D in older adults for helping to prevent falls, maintain mobility, and reduce age-related disability. "
"A Tory councillor on Surrey’s health committee has called for seriously ill people to be forced out of the county. John Butcher has suggested those with “self-inflicted morbidity” should be “encouraged” to “move away from Surrey” – in the name of pushing up house prices."
You don’t have to go far from the beaches of Costa Adeje to see the proud heritage of the past. Just 10 minutes inland from Fañabe, Torviscas and La Caleta is Adeje - one of my favourite towns – and it’s full of pleasant surprises.
Criss crossed with the trails that used to take workers to the fields and tiles to export points, the south west hills provide some splendid walks through the ghosts of its past and spring some surprises along the way.
“I’d liken this to what the Nazis did, working the disabled and the sick until they dropped dead and were no longer a burden.”

Update 31 May 2012: Well, I don’t imagine it’s gone away in the last year and half since I last posted about this problem, but prostitution has again become a huge issue in Playa de las Américas. Once again, it’s concentrated in Calles de Llanos d...

"Monarchy, we are often told, is merely a symbol, nothing more! Tell that to the fairies, it sits at the pinnacle of class prejudice and privilege. When MP’s, diplomats, the military, police and judges pledge allegiance to the Queen; they are really pledging allegiance to Britain's ruling elites and it is their duty to enforce the class prejudices that are beneficial to their own way of life."

Today I should have been out celebrating and enjoying myself, quaffing some local wine and no doubt stuffing myself with traditional foods, whilst listening to Canarian musicians and learning more about “my” island. However, I wasn’t, instead I am...
