Openness - in the next section, I suggest that ‘digital scholarship’ is really a shorthand for digital, networked and open. Arguably it is the last component that is most significant. Openness in practice - whether it is sharing ideas via blogs, open courses, open educational resources, open access publishing or open data - is becoming a default approach for many academics (and this course is an example). This has profound implications on practice, business models, identity and the role of sectors, which we are only beginning to appreciate.
"What do scholars offer present politics? Does it depend on the discipline - sociology vs. history vs. chemistry - and, within disciplines, on sub-fields? Amongst historians, does a US historian like Cronon have more to offer than, say, a medievalist? Does it matter *where you live* (Cronon's made much of his place-based identity), or *what you know* (e.g. for the sake of comparison), or *how you think* (pattern recognition, textual analysis, &c.)?
Possibly all of these questions matter. What I want to figure out is (1) what Cronon thinks he has to offer as a "Scholar Citizen" (which is *not* the same as a "Citizen Scholar," the analogue of the "Citizen Scientist"), and (2) how this relates to the relationship between "scholarship" and "citizenship" (or politics)."
Is the point of humanities scholarship to participate in the production and communication of humanistic knowledge, or is it to demonstrate a certain level of mastery or academic reputation?
Imagine dialing up collaboration in such a way that a group of 6-8 scholars would team-write articles on a series of issues (extraordinarily wide open, this). A scholarship-producing cousin of the think tank.
What happens if we make scholarly publication into a collective enterprise?

Obviously we have the technical capacity to collaborate and publish online with either open access or a pay model from micropayments to freemium and so on. Most of the costs associated with online scholarly publication are labor, and social networking, properly handled, can reduce the management costs. So let's say you had 15-20 active scholars, who saw their work as inter-related. Together, they might publish 15 articles and a couple books each year. The group works as an editorial collective. Honestly you might get more feedback with this model than you get on articles you publish now.
Online, open access is the superior model for scholarly communication. A variety of scientific communities in physics, the life sciences and economics have gone furthest in innovating their scholarly communication through open access, enhancing accessibility for scientists, students and the interested public.
This paper describes the current systems, processes and actors. While technological advancements appear to be enabling access to scholarly publications, economic conditions appear to limit access. In addition, a number of alternatives, such as open access are currently in play and there is uncertainty regarding the future of the scholarly publishing system.
“This Is Scholarship” is a movie that attempts to fill this gap. In providing examples of different forms of scholarship that exist online, the movie argues that existing online scholarship is multiple and varied enough already that a more flexible de
