Unleashed: Testing times

Today's children are already struggling - mentally, emotionally, socially and physically and now we have overloaded their fragile worlds because of zealous politicians who have little understanding of the far-reaching, unintended effects of their decisions on children in our schools.

NAPLAN will not give parents an indication of the best school for their child, it will not help them judge which teacher will really excel at teaching their child.

BBC NEWS | UK | Education | Danish pupils use web in exams | Diigo

Stephen Heppell, professor of new media environments at Bournemouth University, says UK examinations need to be brought up to date: "As a nation we've been really good at embracing technology - we've been really at the forefront of doing this well in the classroom.

"Then they go into the exam room and all that's taken away and they're given a fountain pen and a sheet of lines paper and a three hour time limit. It's time to get real, isn't it?"

Surely there's a better test

"How have I been shaped by my learning experiences? What skills have I \ndeveloped that are valuable and transferable in the workplace? What lessons have \nI learned about the value of education?\n\nSadly, over the past two years, we students have been forced to work within a \nsystem that reduces achievement to a game where strategies are more important \nthan ideas. I cannot help feeling a little cynical when I consider that the sum \ntotal of my education will soon amount to nothing more than a figure - an ENTER \nscore that will determine which percentile I fall into statewide and which \ncourses I will be eligible to apply for"

MATTHEW MOORE

the Ombudsman ignored these and other complaints in his withering assessment that describes the office's behaviour as adversarial, defensive, combative, obfuscatory, technical, legalistic, unco-operative as well as being in breach of the law.

The Office of the Board of Studies refused to provide the Ombudsman with 66 key documents, including all the legal advice it took from the Crown Solicitor's Office when refusing the students's FOI requests, on the grounds these documents were confidential and protected by legal professional privilege.

Scrap HSC for national test: new boss

THE nation's new curriculum chief says a national secondary school certificate is needed to replace the HSC and other state-based leaving certificates.

In an interview with the Herald, Peter Hill, who begins work as chief executive of the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority on Monday, said a national certificate would not come about in the next few years. ''But we can start laying the foundations for it,'' he said.

''In the short-term, it's not appropriate. In the longer-term, yes, I believe that we need a national certificate.''

Bright students 'betrayed' by HSC

THE HSC is a blunt instrument that leaves many of the most talented students excluded from higher education, the head of Australia's oldest university says.

The University of Sydney's vice-chancellor, Michael Spence, told the Herald the entry ranking system was biased towards students who attended private and selective high schools.
