Beyond Google - Improve Your Search Results | Free Technology for Teachers

"While working with some of my colleagues in a workshop earlier this week, I was reminded that a lot of people aren't familiar with tools and strategies for refining Internet search results. In response to that experience, I sat down this morning and created this short guide to 15 tools and strategies for helping your students (and your colleagues) improve their Internet search results. I've embedded the guide below in two different forms which you can download for free."

CreateChange.org

"In the age of the Internet, the ways you share and use academic research results are changing — rapidly, fundamentally, irreversibly. There’s great potential in change. After all, faster and wider sharing of journal articles, research data, simulations, syntheses, analyses, and other findings fuels the advance of knowledge. It’s a two-way street — sharing research benefits you and others. But will the promise of digital scholarship be fully realized? How will yesterday’s norms adapt to tomorrow’s possibilities?"

The Victorian Women Writers Project

The goal of the Victorian Women Writers Project is to produce highly accurate transcriptions of works by British women writers of the 19th century, encoded using the Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML). The works, selected with the assistance of the Advisory Board, will include anthologies, novels, political pamphlets, religious tracts, children's books, and volumes of poetry and verse drama. Considerable attention will be given to the accuracy and completeness of the texts, and to accurate bibliographical descriptions of them. Texts will be encoded according to the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) Guidelines, using the TEILite.DTD (version 1.6) We will include with each text a header describing fully the source text, the editorial decisions, and the resulting computer file. The texts will be made freely available through the World Wide Web.

CARRIE

Of course, there were other repositories. internet.spies.com held a sizable collection of documents of American history and the like. But HISTORY@FINNHUTC was trying to find new places to store the data that it was accumulating. One of the members of the list, Don Mabry at Mississippi State University, had set up RA, a "public FTP" site, from which anyone who knew the net address could fetch copies of any of the files stored there. It was the only such site devoted to the storage of materials for historians. For some reason or another, I was seized by a passionate desire to construct a second site for historical materials, went to the Academic Computer Center here at the University of Kansas, and impetuously asked for the facilities to do so as well as someone to teach me how such a thing was done.

DigitalBookIndex.com

"Over the last decade, a quiet revolution has been going on in the development of a large library of "digital" or "electronic" books. While there are still large gaps, a very substantial body of "Western" thought is available in the form of downloadable or on-line books. Most major writers, from Plato to Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Proust, or John Le Carré, are accessible on the Internet. Subjects range from the highly scholarly to the contemporary and popular — especially as more commercial publishers discover the virtues of "on-line" distribution. This index is intended as a "Meta-index" for most major eBook sites, along with thousands of smaller specialized sites. In some subject categories, the resources you find here are more comprehensive than those of all but the largest of research libraries, due to the budget & space constraints of smaller institutions."
