ここで1つ問題になったのが、使いたいWebアプリは別なのに、Prismのアイコンがデフォルトの1種類だったこと。デスクトップに同じアイコンのショートカットが大量に増殖してしまい、これでは返って使いづらい。もちろん、ショートカットのプロパティからアイコンは変更できるのだが、ちょっと面倒くさかったりする。

通常の方法でPrismにGmailなどのWebアプリを登録したところ。アイコンが同じなので複数のアプリを使うには紛らわしい（左）。タイトルバーにも同じアイコンでなんだか味気ない

　そこで便利なのが、アイコンが付属するバンドル版のPrism。対象となるWebアプリのアイコンがバンドルされているので、インストールすればそのままデスクトップなどにアイコンを設置できる。これで複数のPrismを利用していても、迷わず活用できるようになるわけだ。

ちなみにバンドル版のPrismはMozillaのWikiでダウンロードできる。Mozilla公式としては、Gmail、Google Calendar、Google Docs、Google Groups、Google Analytics、Google Reader、Facebook、Twitterといった9つのバンドル版が利用できる。また、ユーザーが作成した各Webアプリのバンドル版も用意されているので、こちらも確認してみるといいだろう。

Prism（旧Webrunner）というソフトウェアがある。これはある特定のWebサービス専用Geckoブラウザで、Webアプリケーションをデスクトップのように見せてくれる。

そして同種のソフトウェア、それもSafariを使ったものを紹介しよう。これもまた便利だ。

今回紹介するフリーウェアはFluid、Webアプリケーションをデスクトップアプリケーションのようにするソフトウェアだ。

First, Silverlight and Adobe AIR really are not related at all, and don’t target the same things. As I have said a million times before, if anything, the comparison is between the Flash Player and Silverlight. However, that is not what jumped out at me.

Prism isn’t a new platform, it’s simply the web platform integrated into the desktop experience. Web developers don’t have to target it separately, because any application that can run in a modern standards-compliant web browser can run in Prism. Prism is built on Firefox, so it supports rich internet technologies like HTML, JavaScript, CSS, and <canvas> and runs on Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux.

And while Prism focuses on how web apps can integrate into the desktop experience, we’re also working to increase the capabilities of those apps by adding functionality to the Web itself, such as providing support for offline data storage and access to 3D graphics hardware.

Do you see where I am going with this? You could describe Adobe AIR in exactly the same way (just replace Prism with Adobe AIR and Firefox with Webkit).

So, I guess the thing I found odd was Mozilla appears to be building something very similar to Adobe AIR (which is fine and cool), but somehow it is inherently good when Mozilla does it, and inherently evil when Adobe does it.

PrismからWebアプリケーションを起動すると、ブラウザではなく独自のウィンドウ内で動作する。通常のデスクトップアプリケーションと同様に、Control-Tab、Command-Tab、Exposeを使ってウィンドウを操作できるという。最近の標準に対応したWebブラウザで動作するアプリケーションはすべてPrismで動作するため、開発者はPrism向けにアプリケーションを変更する必要はないとMozillaは説明している。

　AdobeとMicrosoftも、Webアプリケーションを実行するためのプログラムとしてそれぞれAIR（Adobe Integrated Runtime）とSilverlightを開発しているが、Mozillaは、Prismはそれとは違って、Webに取って代わるプロプライエタリなプラットフォームを構築しているのではないと主張している。

　またMozilla Labsは、Prismをダウンロードしなくても、Firefoxから直接PrismでWebアプリケーションを開く方法にも取り組んでいるという。

Prismは、ウェブ技術を用いてデスクトップアプリケーションを作成するためのソフトウェアである「Adobe Integrated Runtime（AIR）」のオープンソース版である。AIRはバージョン1.0が2008年前半にリリースされる予定である。既にAIRを利用するアプリケーションがいくつか開発されている。

　Mozilla Labsは、ウェブアプリケーションの世界をデスクトップOSに統合させようとしている。ユーザーのウェブアプリケーションの利用は高まっているものの、それらはまだデスクトップアプリケーションとはあまりうまく統合されていないからである。

最終的な目標は、開発者らに、既存のウェブ開発技術を用いて、Prismを利用したアプリケーションを作成してもらうことである。Adobe AIRも、開発者らが標準的なウェブ開発ツールを用いてAIR上で動作するプログラムを作成できるようにする。

　Firefox 3を開発中のユーザーエクスペリエンスデザイナーAlex Faaborg氏は、「Prismにより、ウェブ上の斬新で革新的なアプリケーションを、そのアプリケーションの作成者が追加で何かを開発することなく、ユーザーのデスクトップ環境に統合することができるようになる」と記している。

　Mozilla Labsは、AdobeのAIRがプロプライエタリでソースが非公開であるのに対し、Prismはオープンソースソフトウェアであるという事実を強調している。

Prism 0.8 also has some neat new features. We have been trying to collect the bugs and feature requests out of the feedback and blog posts. Here are some things that have been added or fixed for the this release:



• CSS themes - Bundles now support common (all platforms) and OS specific CSS theme overrides. You can make web applications take on different CSS styles
• Spell check support - Red squiggles and suggestions on the context menu.
• Better external link handling - Spreadsheets from Google Docs were opening in the default browser.
• Tooltips support - We now display tooltips for elements with “title” attributes.
• Copying hyperlinks - Context menu supports copying a link location, if you right click on a link.
• More “Install Shortcut” options - Quick Launch Bar and Start Menu were added on Windows and Application folder was added on Mac.
• “Install Web Application” - similar to the “Install Shortcut” dialog, but this will create a web application *without* needing a webapp bundle. Launching Prism without any parameters, or from the Start Menu or Finder, to activate the dialog. (Alex’s post has more details).
