Environmental group WWF Scotland has reacted with dismay at news today [1] that Edinburgh-based oil firm, Cairn Energy, has begun drilling oil exploration wells in the waters off Greenland. WWF Scotland had hoped plans to drill in the environmentally-sensitive Arctic environment would be postponed following the recent BP oil disaster. WWF is calling for an immediate moratorium on new drilling activities in the Arctic.
"Is that the smell of bio-kerosene in the air? If you were one of the passengers on KLM Royal Dutch Airline’s first passenger flight powered by bio-kerosene this week, then you were also one of the first to get a whiff of this new sustainable fuel, if indeed it is whiff-able.
The Netherlands airline underscored its Boeing 747 biofuels test flight with an announcement that it has formed a joint venture to develop sustainable biofuels on a large scale. Called SkyEnergy, the consortium includes KLM, North Sea Petroleum and Spring Associates. In addition, the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) will advise the consortium about the ecological aspects of the venture."

The research was prepared for WWF-Germany and Allianz Group by the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research in the United Kingdom.
"Brace yourself Boston: Sea level rise from climate change could jeopardize Hub assets worth $463 billion.
A new report out by World Wildlife Fund and insurer Allianz warns that sea levels could rise along the U.S. coast a whopping 26 inches by 2050 as the world warms. That would place assets worth $7.4 trillion at risk along the US coast. "

"A number of very large cities in Asia are "extremely exposed to threats such as storms and flooding", according to a new report by global conservation organization WWF.
"Climate change is already shattering cities across developing Asia and will be even more brutal in the future. These cities are vulnerable and need urgent help to adapt, in order to protect the lives of millions of citizens, a massive amount of assets, their large contributions to the national GDP," says Kim Carstensen, leader of the WWF Global Climate Initiative, at the organization’s homepage."
"WWF Sweden is urging its government – holding the current EU Presidency - to get behind an effective international agreement on halting forest loss as a key and highly cost effective measure on climate change.
“Sweden should follow the examples set by its northern neighbors in developing systems to halt deforestation,” said WWF CEO General Lasse Gustavsson.. “One Swedish krona to stem deforestation results in the same emissions reductions as five kronor for the controversial carbon capture and storage technique,” "
Spain late last month boosted efforts to bring into effect an international treaty to share and protect rivers and lakes crossing or forming international borders, telling the United Nations General Assembly it was committed to jointly addressing issues of security, development and protection of the environment.
For years, environmental organizations like Greenpeace and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) have warned that overfishing could cause bluefin tuna to go the way of dinosaurs and dodos. Now the European Commission says it agrees with that grim assessment. In a compromise that unites Europe's departments of environment and fisheries, the commission lent its support to a proposal that, barring new scientific evidence, would list Atlantic and Mediterranean bluefin as an endangered species — and therefore ban its trade — for two years.
World Wildlife Fund today released two new studies that underscore how existing information technology (IT) solutions can meet the demands of today's corporations while also reducing the harmful CO2 emissions that contribute to climate change.
