Siemens Energy is currently erecting the power converter stations for a high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) transmission link between Baixas, to the west of Perpignan in France, and Santa Llogaia, south-west of Figueras in Spain, as important components of the Trans-European Network for electrical power. The installation can transmit a rated power of 2000 megawatts (MW) – enough to transport large amounts of electric power with a minimum of transmission losses.

Eurostar has decided to invest over one billion dollars for the acquisition of ten new green trains and for the refurbishment of their entire existing stock in order to create a fleet that operates with lowered carbon emissions and with greener systems as a whole. Eurostar is also doing this as a means of providing a low carbon alternative to flights connecting the countries Eurostar rails already service.

Interoperability is the elephant in the room that is the Smart Grid space. As large companies, startups and utilities alike strive to create a cleaner, more efficient electrical grid — deploying new technologies wherever they can — it is becoming increasingly important for their devices and networks to be able to communicate and work together. Toward that end, leading smart meter and wireless networking provider Silver Spring Networks announced that its equipment can now integrate seamlessly with electrical substations made by Siemens.

Announced today at the GridWeek conference in Washington, D.C., the deal follows in the same vein as Smart Grid network provider Trilliant’s with substation and power automation provider ABB, unveiled yesterday.

If it makes it beyond the drawing broad, Desertec would be the world's largest, most ambitious and expensive green energy project ever: a series of solar thermal power plants across the Sahara desert connecting Africa under the Mediterranean Sea to Europe's power grid.

welve European companies launched a 400-billion-euro (560-billion-dollar) initiative Monday to plant huge solar farms in Africa and the Middle East to produce energy for Europe.

The consortium says the massive proposal could provide up to 15 percent of Europe's electricity needs by 2050.

Engineering giants ABB and Siemens, energy groups E.ON and RWE and financial institutions Deutsche Bank and Munich Re are among the companies which signed a protocol in Munich.

In unveiling the proposal, which calls for building huge swaths of solar thermal plants in the Sahara, wind farms on the North African coast, and high-voltage transmission lines to carry all that juice back to Europe, the Desertec companies first stressed all the business opportunities the plan would represent, then paid lip service to the environment.
