An investigation into Pacific Gas and Electric Co.'s SmartMeters has found that the residential meters being installed in millions of California homes are "consistent with industry standards and performing accurately."
But the report, released Thursday by the California Public Utilities Commission, blasted PG&E for its defensive customer service culture. Independent investigators found that the San Francisco-based utility did not adequately address customer complaints and concerns about the new technology, which is designed to give consumers more up-to-date data on their energy use.
It found that customers were "consistently treated by PG&E as wrong, until the customer proved to PG&E that they were right," and noted a lack of professionalism among front-line customer service representatives.
"The problems raised by the massive Pacific Gas & Electric smart grid installation in California will serve as a valuable lesson for other utilities around the world when they begin similar endeavors. Utilities must ensure that customers understand how to fully utilize their new smart meters before they are installed."

Pacific Gas and Electric announced today that it’s partnering with the city of San Jose, Calif., to deploy a major project integrating smart meters provided by the utility with the city’s well-developed solar energy infrastructure.
California's next source of renewable power could be an orbiting set of solar panels, high above the equator, that would beam electricity back to Earth via a receiving station in Fresno County.
Pacific Gas & Electric, one of the country's largest and most progressive utilities, will invest directly in solar power plants and solar panels distributed in different California communities.
CEO Peter Darbee said the move represents the first time that PG&E--already a large purchaser of solar and other renewable energy technologies--will build and own solar installations. Right now, the utility purchases clean energy from third parties.
