The organisers of a ¥100bn ($1.1bn) smart grid trial in Japan have pulled in electronic giants Toyota Motor, Panasonic and Toshiba to take part, according to a Bloomberg report.
The trial will include a central ¥56bn project where smart meters, electric charging stations and 27MW solar panels will be installed in homes in the Japanese city of Yokohama, the report said.
Panasonic has committed to a 50 per cent reduction (120 million tonnes) in the level of greenhouse gases produced compared with 2006 levels by 2018 by maximising its use of resources.

There’s more to Panasonic’s new Eco Ideas strategy than energy-efficient electronics and appliances. Sure they’re proud of their no-lead plasmas, tilted-drum washer/dryer combos and self-cleaning toilets (my recent trip to Kyoto revealed just how serious the Japanese take their high-tech commodes), but the real gem of this movement is the fuel cell.
