Four Greenpeace activists who halted drilling by a British-owned oil exploration rig off Greenland have been arrested after they abandoned their occupation because of severe weather.

Greenlandic police arrested the four after high winds buffeted the Stena Don drilling rig overnight, forcing them to abandon mountaineering-style platforms they had suspended by ropes underneath the platform less than 48 hours earlier.

While politicians and oil execs perpetuate reckless endeavors to exploit the world’s scant and hard-to-access oil reserves, another powerful industry group is building the tools to end this addiction once and for all. Information Technology solutions can make the U.S. and the world more efficient, less carbon intensive, and less reliant on fossil fuels. With bigger investments, strong political advocacy, and a serious jumpstart to the development of technological solutions, IT companies can help us end our oil addiction.

An expedition by environmental group Greenpeace has revealed a stunning array of sea life on the Arctic Ocean seabed.
The crew on board the Greenpeace ship, Esperanza, sailed to waters north of Norway's Svalbard Islands to record the footage.
Using state-of-the-art equipment, veteran underwater photographer Gavin Newman was able to capture rare images of sea anemones, tunicates and soft corals which appear to thrive in the harsh subzero temperatures.
"We came here very much prepared to survey vast areas of flat sand and mud, but we have found an amazing amount of under water biodiversity," Newman told CNN.

Greenpeace activists have boarded the 290-meter long coal ship Orient Venus on the high seas. Joanna Jones, Mor Levy and Jense Loewe arrived in inflatable boats and climbed up the side of the huge vessel. They have built a camp on the ship's mast in order to stop the coal shipment from entering Israel.

The latest version of Greenpeace’s Cool IT Leaderboard (1) reveals how some global IT companies are leading the industry by proving the potential of IT solutions to address climate change and reshape energy use, while others seem unable to decide if IT climate solutions are a significant business opportunity or a simple marketing strategy

Last month, Facebook announced that it was building its first data center, in Prineville, Oregon, in the northwest of the US. Unfortunately for the climate, we soon found out that instead of renewable energy, Facebook chose to operate its data center with energy from Pacific Power, a utility that is fueled primarily by coal. Last Friday, Greenpeace responded by challenging the company to become a climate champion and dump coal

When two GreenPeace activists were detained after exposing major corruption in the Japanese whaling industry - we knew the Japanese authorities breached internationally guaranteed human rights. Now, as these two activists prepare to take the stand and have their day, or more in court, the violation of their human rights has been confirmed by a UN working group. "

The New Zealand Ministry of Fisheries is consulting on a proposal to increase the Total Allowable Catch for the endangered southern bluefin tuna by 25% within the current fishing season.

Please use this quick form to send a message to the Minister of Fisheries, Phil Heatley, and ask that he order the Ministry to withdraw this proposal at once, and make a submission on this outrageous proposal by the Ministry of Fisheries.

"The Coca-Cola Company and its bottling partners today announced that 100 percent of their new vending machines and coolers will be hydrofluorocarbon-free (HFC-free) by 2015. Coca-Cola is committing to use its scale to aggregate demand and encourage supply as a means of accelerating the transition to HFC-free refrigeration equipment. This announcement is a direct result of work with Greenpeace that began in 2000, and a demonstration that phasing out the use of HFCs is a tangible and near-term action corporations can take to protect the climate. "People could some day recall that it was the Information Technology (IT) industry's advocacy for strong action which tipped the balance at the Copenhagen climate summit. But that's not going to happen unless all of us press them to become climate champions. As our updated Cool IT Challenge leaderboard reveals, IT heavyweights such as Google, Microsoft and IBM are still hesitating to speak up on the urgent need for emissions reductions. "

For years, environmental organizations like Greenpeace and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) have warned that overfishing could cause bluefin tuna to go the way of dinosaurs and dodos. Now the European Commission says it agrees with that grim assessment. In a compromise that unites Europe's departments of environment and fisheries, the commission lent its support to a proposal that, barring new scientific evidence, would list Atlantic and Mediterranean bluefin as an endangered species — and therefore ban its trade — for two years.
