Chris left BT after a long and influential career in the company to pursue new pastures in sustainability. He kindly agreed to provide some personal reflections after a 20 year career in the field.

Reflecting back over twenty years of corporate sustainability and then attempting to summarise that into a 500 word blog is an almost impossible task.

Much has changed. Twenty years ago...

A group of businesses including British Airways, BT and The Co-operative as well as NGOs and MPs have issued a statement saying the GIB must be designed with a clear picture of the low carbon economy wants to achieve and over what timeframe.

It said the government must ensure the GIB is sufficiently capitalised by at least £4bn-6bn over the next four years.

SO-called 'green' energy providers are not all they seem, a watchdog has warned.

As much as one-third of electricity sold by eco-friendly companies such as Airtricity is produced by burning gas, coal, peat and oil -- the fossil fuels that are the main cause of global warming.

The Commission for Energy Regulation (CER) said yesterday that just 65.6pc of all power sold by Airtricity comes from renewable sources, with the rest produced from fossil fuels, including gas (24.8pc), coal (5.7pc), peat (2.7pc) and oil (1pc).

The figure is even lower for Quinn Wind Farm Ltd, which produces just 28pc from wind with the bulk of power provided to customers (51.5pc) produced by burning gas.

The philosophy at BT, the world-leading telecommunications company, is that being a responsible company makes good business sense. As experts in the competitive world of digital communication, BT understands the need to adapt to survive; part of that means making the best use of limited natural resources.

Data centers are, thankfully, getting a lot of attention when it comes to making them more efficient. Considering that roughly 60% of the electricity used at a data center goes to keeping the servers cool, focusing on smart cooling tactics is essential. HP has taken this to heart and has opened it's first wind-cooled data center, and it's the company's most efficient data center to date.

In this piece, HP claims that their data center is the world's first wind-cooled data center - I'm not sure just how valid this is as I have heard BT only do wind-cooled data centers!

Reducing impact on climate change is a challenge many corporations are trying to tackle. Many organizations are up for the challenge but many are unsure of where to begin among the myriad of activities on the table.

Due to these challenges, I’ve developed a white paper which I hope will provide more insight on how to navigate these challenges. The Four Dimensions of Sustainability evolved from my trying to put BT’s and other company’s many sustainability activities into a logical set of categories for a presentation I had to give.
