While everybody and his brother (if Honda, Yamaha, BMW and Piaggio count) prepares to launch a new wave of electric scooters, one of the original players, Rhode Island-based Vectrix, is preparing to bow out.

A victim of the "good idea a little too soon" syndrome, Vectrix has told most of its employees adios and says the remaining staff is beginning "the process of preparing for a bankruptcy filing..."

Introduction:

The Mini-e is in a 'field trial' in the US. It is an all-electric car. It has the same body as a Mini Cooper S. People were invited to apply for one. Well, actually, for a 1-year lease. My sister and her husband applied and recieved one of the first ones to be delivered in LA. (They are only availalbe in the LA and New York areas.) At the end of the year the car will have to go back to Mini Cooper for evaluation.

We picked up the Mini-e at Alexander Mini in LA on Saturday, May 30, 2009.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg recently announced that BMW’s hotly anticipated Mini-E will soon be hitting the streets of NYC! This April BMW will loan the city ten fully-electric Mini Coopers to participate in New York’s “Street Condition Observation Unit” (SCOUT), which scours city streets for road damage, graffiti, and other instances where infrastructure repair is needed. The zippy zero-emission vehicles will lend the program their lightweight carbon footprint in exchange for an extensive round of road testing.
