A new report by the Green Scissors Campaign details some $200 billion worth of yearly US government subsidies that the coalition says are "wasteful to taxpayers, harmful to the environment and bad for consumers." Green Scissors 2010 [PDF] covers four broad areas in which these subsidies occur-- energy, agriculture and biofuels, infrastructure, and public lands.
"Municipal transit agencies have tried to reduce the carbon footprint of their bus fleets using a range of options over the years, from biofuels and hydrogen to batteries and hybrid-electric diesel. Now a Chinese company and its U.S. partner say that ultracapacitors could offer the greenest and most economical way of powering inner-city buses."
A unique fungus that makes diesel compounds has been discovered living in trees in the rainforest, according to a paper published in the November issue of Microbiology. The fungus is potentially a totally new source of green energy and scientists are now working to develop its fuel producing potential.
The UK government is lobbying for aviation to be excluded from an EU target to increase renewable energy.
Documents passed to BBC News reveal that Whitehall wants the industry exempted from a general target of 20% renewable energy by 2020.
It also wants interim targets leading up to 2020, and targets on clean energy in new homes, to be optional.
The UK intends to address environmental and social impacts by introducing mandatory sustainability criteria for all biofuels in 2011. The European Commission is also expected to introduce mandatory criteria onto its agenda for the Renewable Energies Directive at the end of the year. But as things stand, there is a dearth of regulatory standards.
