Drawing on the layered design of tear-inducing onions, scientists have created a new super capacitor that is powerful enough -- and cheap enough -- to replace the larger, heavier capacitors used in consumer electronics such as computers and cells phones.

If commercialized, the new super capacitor could be fully charged in a second and, coupled to a normal battery, provide enough energy to power a cell phone for weeks or a laptop battery for days.

Chemists have figured out a new way to charge up electronics that drastically speeds up how long it takes to fill up to full. Ibrahim Abou Hamad at Mississippi State University show off a new way to recharge lithium ion batteries that could be a huge boon for electronics across the board, but while we immediately think of how much faster we might be able to text away on our cell phones, or go snap photos with our digital cameras, the real impact could happen when it comes to electric cars and "range anxiety."

Could we one day see a battery-free future for mobile phones, electric cars and other devices?

European researchers believe we can, and have just launched a €3.4 million project to develop a new material that could essentially allow phone housings and car bodies to act as their own power source. The effort, if successful, could enable credit-card-thin phones and electric cars far smaller, lighter and more efficient than those today.

Dip an ordinary piece of paper into ink infused with carbon nanotubes and silver nanowires, and it turns into a battery or supercapacitor. Crumple the piece of paper, and it still works. Stanford researcher Yi Cui sees many uses for this new way of storing electricity.

Aside from the issue of limited range, the biggest problem with electric vehicles in the near term is expected to be cost. Mitsubishi has already announced that the starting price for its diminutive iMiEV in Japan will be approximately $47,000 before incentives and Tesla's Model S will start at $57,000 (before incentives) and likely go up rapidly from there. One of the ideas being floated for reducing the up front cost of EVs is battery leasing

Electric sedan maker Coda Automotive has attracted some well-connected people with its latest round of funding, including former Treasury Secretary and Goldman Sachs CEO Henry Paulson.

The company, which plans to sell an all-electric sedan in California next year, said on Tuesday that it has completed a series B round of $24 million in equity. The money will be used to bring its car to market and fund a joint venture to manufacture the car battery.
