Taiwan said Friday it would launch 50 low-carbon communities by 2012 as part of its effort to cut carbon emissions and become a leader in environmental protection.

Under the 10-year plan, by 2012, at least two districts in each city or county will be asked to cut carbon emissions by using wind or solar power, electric vehicles and energy-saving lighting and appliances

A Taiwan company has built a three-storey exhibition hall using 1.5 million plastic bottles instead of bricks to raise interest in recycling, creating what the builder described as a world-first.

"Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou on Tuesday expressed the wish that Taiwan can have official representation at the Copenhagen climate summit. "Taiwan now can only be represented by civic groups and non- governmental organizations (NGO) at next month's Copenhagen climate conference.
