Catastrophic floods in Pakistan, wildfires in Russia, hurricanes in Mexico: 2010 has so far been an "exceptional" year for weather disasters, German reinsurance giant Munich Re said Thursday."This year really has been a year of weather records," Peter Hoeppe, an expert from Munich Re's Geo Risks Research department, told journalists. "The first nine months of the year have seen the highest number of weather-related events since Munich Re started keeping records," he added.
Hoeppe added that a clear pattern of continuing global warming was contributing to the natural disasters. 2010 has so far been the warmest since measurements began 130 years ago. New temperature records were set in Russia (37.8 degrees centigrade) and in Asia (53.5 degrees in Pakistan).

LED is Coming of Age
To paraphrase William Gibson, the future of lighting is here, it's just not evenly distributed. Light-emitting diodes (LED) lightbulbs have been coming on the market in the past few years, but their quality varies greatly, from "almost perfect" to "horrible" (kind of like the early compact fluorescents). I had the opportunity to spend a few days with two LED lightbulbs from Qnuru, and I'd like to share my impressions with you. Read on for more photos and my review.

1,500-lumen prototype produces as much light as a 100-watt halogen bulb, using 1/3 the energy. GE’s patented “dual cool jets” technology solves thermal challenges, enables lamp design that is half the size and weight of a 600-lumen LED downlight available today

GE are bringing out an LED bulb that'll replace incandescents, giving you 17 years worth of light from a $50 bulb.

So far, LED bulbs are much more expensive, and they haven't made a big splash in the market because of this and a lack of warm lighting (though the colors and temperatures are getting much better across the board). But GE hopes they'll be a game changer for LEDs.

The latest product from EXERGI LED -XG4WW-E And are designed to replace existing GU10 halogen light bulbs, the lamp is even more efficent because it uses only 3.6 watts of power giving you even more energy savings of up to 90% over regular GU10 halogen light bulbs.

Fitted with unique HyperBright techonology and world-leading CREE semiconductors, the EXERGI LED is one of the brightest GU10 LED light bulbs currently on the market. This new lamp has the latest techonology for a wider beam angle of 36 Degree and the very latest Cree Semi conductors. The new EXERGI XG4WW-E develops a very impressive 255 Lumen of flux producing 505 Cd of warm white colour.

I bought one of these lamps recently to replace a 50W halogen an I can say it is a very bright light

Huddler Bobkart developed a formula for computing the total (tangible) cost of ownership of light bulbs that takes into account the initial cost of the bulb, its energy consumption, its light output, its lifetime length, and the cost of electricity

"Does the latest generation of energy-saving light bulbs save energy? A comprehensive study conducted by Osram, the German lighting company, provides evidence that they do.

While that may seem self-evident, until the release of the report on Monday the answer remained unclear."

Walmart, said it will use light emitting diode lights from Cree in new stores and retrofitted ones. In the first year, that will come to 650 stores alone.

The stores will replace ceramic metal halide lights, those honkers you see in the ceiling of big box retailers. The Cree bulbs will emit the same amount of light as a 70-watt bulb but use 82% less power.

he ubiquitous but highly inefficient 60-watt light bulb badly needs a makeover. And it could be worth millions in government prize money — and more in government contracts — to the first company that figures out how to do it.

Right now, that company could be Philips, the Dutch electronics giant. The company announced on Thursday that it had submitted the first entry for the L Prize, an Energy Department contest that will award up to $10 million to the first person or group to create a new energy-sipping version of the most popular type of light bulb used in America.

As an alternative to the traditional incandescent light bulb, LED lights provide significant energy savings. They can be 2,000 percent more efficient than conventional light bulbs and 500 percent more efficient than compact fluorescent bulbs. Engineers and scientists predict that widespread use of LEDs over the course of 10 years would save more than $1 trillion in energy costs, eliminate the need for nearly a billion barrels of oil over 10 years, and lead to a substantial reduction in emissions of carbon dioxide, the most common greenhouse gas. In the August issue of Nature Photonics, available online, scientists at the University of Michigan and Princeton University announce a discovery that pushes more appealing white light from organic light-emitting devices.

More white light is the holy grail of the next generation of lighting. The innovation in the paper "Enhanced Light Out-Coupling of Organic Light-Emitting Devices Using Embedded Low-Index Grids" describes a way to deliver significantly more bright light from a watt than incandescent bulbs.
