British, American and Norwegian engineers are in a race to design and build the holy grail of wind turbines - giant, 10MW offshore machines twice the size and power of anything seen before - that could transform the global energy market because of their economies of scale.
Huge wind turbines with a span rivalling that of the London Eye could form part of the UK's energy future.
The first giant offshore turbine, named Britannia, will be complete by 2012.
It will tower 574ft (175m) above the North Sea, with blades that sweep a circle more than 100ft (30m) wider than the diameter of the London landmark.
Despite a crippling recession and tight credit markets, the American wind power industry grew at a blistering pace in 2009, adding 39 percent more capacity. The country is close to the point where 2 percent of its electricity will come from wind turbines.
Adobe Systems is yet another company that has jumped on the alternative power energy bandwagon. Located in the heart of Silicon Valley, Adobe Systems has installed 20 Windspire vertical axis turbines atop the parking garage of its LEED certified office complex.
A South Korean consortium led by Samsung C&T Corporation has won a $6 billion deal to supply renewable energy equipment to the Canadian province of Ontario, the company said on Thursday
"Helix Wind announced Wednesday that it's beginning a trial run in Southern California to see if its wind turbines might be useful for powering cell phone towers.
The manufacturer is becoming known for its small vertical-axis wind turbines that can generate electricity with winds as low as 10 mph, as well as its unique business model to finance them."
One of the world's largest wind farms is now operational in the area surrounding Roscoe, Texas, E.ON Climate & Renewables (EC&R) announced Thursday.
The series of 627 wind turbines providing a 781.5-megawatt capacity covers about 100,000 acres and four Texas counties. But it's not an isolated wind farm per se, nor a uniform series of turbines.
a selection of pictures and descriptions of some of the most spectacular & truly ambitious wind turbine designs of this millennium…whose scope & promise could pave the way for much greater harnessing of wind energy
The next generation of windfarms may not look like anything we have seen so far.
Turbines of the future could have vertical wings like giant washing lines spinning high above the ocean.
Home wind turbines are only generating a fraction of electricity promised by the manufacturers while some even fail to yield enough energy to run the turbine's electronics, a British study warned on Tuesday.
Reacting to the report Alex Murley of the British Wind Energy Association said. sited correctly, small and micro wind turbines have the capability to provide more than 10% of Britain's electricity needs.
Many of today's problems in ecology and conservation involve juggling large numbers of variables, often to find the optimum way to balance them. Some are so complex, the researchers say, that they will require new advances in computer science. The Computational Sustainability institute hope to create a new field of computational sustainability, analogous to computational biology, that will stimulate new developments in the computer science areas of constraint optimization, dynamical systems and machine learning. The researchers are also launching a new Journal of Computational Sustainability.
In a plan that would drastically remake New York City’s skyline and shores, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg is seeking to put wind turbines on the city’s bridges and skyscrapers and in its waters as part of a wide-ranging push to develop renewable energy.
This roadmap requires $50 trillion investment, 32 new nuclear plants each year, 17,500 new wind turbines each year...
These are big numbers.
