Technology company IBM is to create up to 200 jobs in Dublin over the next three years at a new research centre.
The €66 million development in its Smarter Cities Technology Centre, which will be located at IBM's Mulhuddart site, is being assisted by the IDA.
IBM unveiled a list of innovations that have the potential to change how people live, work and play in cities around the globe over the next five to ten years:
· Cities will have healthier immune systems
· City buildings will sense and respond like living organisms
· Cars and city buses will run on empty
· Smarter systems will quench cities’ thirst for water and save energy
· Cities will respond to a crisis -- even before receiving an emergency phone call
The Stockholm Congestion Charging System, created by IBM has significantly improved access to the Swedish capital by halving queuing times on access roads to the city in the mornings. \n\nCity traffic is down by 18% and CO2 emissions in the inner city have been cut by between 14 and 18 percent. These are the results of the latest study on the system by the Stockholm City Traffic authorities.
Europe will select 30 cities to pioneer "smart" electricity grids and space-proven insulation as it seeks to lead the global race for green technology, a draft European Union document shows.
IBM, the City of Shenyang, and China's Northeastern University announced they are embarking on a major "smart city" collaboration effort focused on enabling Shenyang to improve the lives of its citizens by meeting its environmental responsibility goals.
IBM and the City of Dubuque, Iowa today announced a new collaboration aimed at making this community of 60,000 one of the first “smarter” sustainable cities in the U.S.
