As governments, businesses, and homeowners plan for the future, they should assume that the world's oceans will rise by at least two meters - roughly seven feet - this century. But far too few agencies or individuals are preparing for the inevitable increase in sea level that will take place as polar ice sheets melt.
Intense rainfall and rising sea levels will increase costs for infrastructure projects such as roads and flood defenses in developing countries, a new World Bank study predicts.
New research indicates that the ocean could rise in the next 100 years to a meter higher than the current sea level – which is three times higher than predictions from the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, IPCC.
